hey guys
really hope you can help.
i recently brought a new large oranda to add to my tank (had 2 large orandas before now there are the 3 of them) my new oranda is slightly bigger than the other 2 but were getting on fine, swimming together, eating together, resting together etc.
over the last 2 days iv noticed that my orange oranda keeps nipping at both of my other orandas. this is new and hasnt done this before. just wondering is it because of the new fish? since my orange oranda has started this my one fish keeps hiding in a pot and the newer fish (to large to fit in the pot) keeps having to swim away. as i said, my orange oranda had never done this before with the other fish so im just wondering if its all started because of the new one?
any idea would be welcome. have read that it may be because he's male and may be coming up to breeding season but he has no white tubercles at all.
thanks katie

Hi katie88
Can you list the size of your aquarium? Fish sometimes will start nipping fins when they are placed in an environment that is too small to accommodate them. What are the sizes of the orandas?

That might be a bit small. Orandas are known to grow HUUUUUUUGE!
something much like 12 inches or even bigger! So keeping three of them in such a small tank might be a bit painful. But I guess you'll notice when you need to upgrade if you're regularly testing your water. But it's true as nabi says, goldfish aren't very territorial, but if the tank is too small, they tend to get hostile towards one another.
I noticed in the second post of yours too that it might be breeding-mood in your aquarium C: But just in case, do keep an eye on these fish in case you would have to get a bigger tank.

A 10 gallon tank is just way too small to keep three goldfish let alone 2!
1, 3 inch goldfish is all a 10 gallon tank can support unless you have filtration for at least a 20 gallon tank or more!!
I had 2 small orandas in my 16 gallon tank but had filtration for a 30 gallon tank. I would never dream of having more than the 2, 1 inch fish in that 16 gallon tank...just too small! Your asking for problems down the road, territorial behavior, as well as water quality problems and eventually illness.

Hi Katie,
I am not that familiar with gallons and inches, lol, i keep my two comets, both about 8-10 cm max in a 34 l tank. I wouldn't keep more fishies in there. I also provide a very good filtration and oxygen supply.
But reading your 2 posts, I think it is breeding time in your tank, as far as I've been learning about goldfish since I've joined this forum

As a side note, liters can be converted into US gallons by dividing the amount of liters by 3.79, and the other way around by multiplying the amount of gallons by 3.79
British gallons can be converted the same way but with 4.55. (Just something I memorized since it might come in handy on this forum!
And I'm too lazy to look for converters all the time xD)
