Help! Inflamed, torn pelvic fin and getting worse by the minute!
« on: June 19, 2011, 05:04:55 PM »

So I have two common goldfish right now in a five gallon tank. They have always been quite active, but recently the larger of my two fish somehow injured himself, causing a small tear in his right pelvic fin and some inflamation in his right eye. I immediately did a partial water change to try and reduce the risk of infection to his injuries, but for the past two days he has not swam, has become pale in color, and both eyes have gone cloudy. Not only that, but it seems as though his breathing has sped up and he refuses to eat, which may be the reason why his poop has become long, stringy and white. Please help! I am not sure if what I thought was an injury is actually a disease and I don't know how I should treat my goldfish. Also, could this malady possibly spread to my other goldfish? I would hate to lose both of them!

Hello thuyle, sorry to hear about your fish's problem.

The first thing I would do is test the water. In such a small space, your fish will be unable to recover if the water quality is poor. Also, do you have a filter, pump, airstone, and how many water changes/how much % do you do per week? It would be helpful info  Smiley

Not eating can result in long, clear poo...what's coming out is just the casing. It's likely your fish has an internal infection. Your fish's injury has become escalated into a severe infection...the cloudy eyes indicate that your fish is most likely suffering from poor water quality, as well as injury. Rapid breathing is also a sign of bad water. I would recommend doing DAILY 50% water changes, treating the water with Prime or Amquel +, and dosing the tank with salt....about 1 and 1/2 tablespoons pre-disolved in a cup of tank water. Illness can spread quite quickly, depending on what it is, and I wouldn't be suprised if your other goldfish began to come down with it too.

If you really care about your goldfish, I would recommend getting them a larger tank. You see, goldfish produce alot of waste and ammonia. Even small fish can quickly pollute a tank without sufficient housing. Ammonia kills fish even in trace ammounts, and right now yours are slowly poisoning themselves. This causes them to get very stressed and suseptable to illness. Stressful situations will prohibit your fish from recovering fast or even at all. Not only that, but common goldfish can grow to be quite large rather rapidly, and if they don't have enough room they will get stunted, meaning that their bodies stop growing but their organs do not. This obviously results in death. So please, please, please as soon as you can, move them to a larger tank. It is recommended to have 10 gallons per fish...meaning your fish should be in a 20 gallon tank at least. This will enable them to live long, healthy, happy lives.  Smiley

I agree with goldiegirl to every single point Smiley

However, I'd like to add a very important point in keeping healthy goldfish: Nutrition.
If you're feeding inappropriate food or too much of it, the fish will get long stringy poo and cloudy eyes can also be a sign of being undernourished.
You need to feed your fish a variety of foods, such as a staple pellet, live foods and vegetables. Examples on live foods would be blood worms, tubifex, gammarus and brine shrimp. Veggies could be peas, cucumber, zucchini, sea weed sheets, algae wafers, lettuce... etc.

And I'll highlight the importance of a bigger tank!! 20 gallon, nothing smaller. And the bigger the better.

Thank you so much for all of the advise! I'm obviously unexperienced with this, and plan to upgrade to a larger tank asap. For now, I will be separarting my two fish until the one recovers and I intend to do the daily water changes.

Great to hear!  Cheesy Separation is a good idea as well, as an injured or sick goldfish can either contaminate the others or be picked on and harrassed by healthy fish. And Nossie is right about the diet...goldfish need variety, just like people.  Smiley

When you have the larger tank and your fish is all better, it is recommended to do weekly 50% water changes and vacuum the gravel. This will keep your water clear and your fish very happy!

I immediately got the new tank and did a water change, but unfortunately my fish just died. Thank you so much for your suggestions though! I'm very grateful for the advice you both gave and I hope my remaining fish remains healthy.

But now the rest of the fish will have better chances to stay healthy in the new tank Smiley

I'm sorry to hear that your sick fish didn't make it. Hopefully though your other one will thrive in the new tank for many years to come. In case you weren't aware, common goldfish can easily grow to be 12+ inches, and live well over 40 years.  Smiley He will be VERY happy to be moved to a wonderful, spacious tank.
