Fin rot/Ich question
« on: September 22, 2011, 12:42:18 PM »

I posted last week about fin rot...I have been battling with this for a week and a half...I do water changes every other day ~40%, add back the salt that I took out, and I have vacuumed the gravel.  I thought this would do the trick, but my smaller fish had a few very tiny white spots on him again last night (ich).  I can't afford a 29 gallon tank yet, so I am stuck with my 10 gallon for now.  Are there any suggestions for how to really get rid of this problem? My fish seem completely fine and arent acting any different, and my other fish who was getting the fin rot hasn't gotten it back, but I am at my wits end with this.  Someone mentioned medicated food...is this the best route to go or should I get medication to treat the water?  Should I do both?  Also, from the website it doesn't look like PetSmart sells medicated food...where do I get this and what is the best brand? If I cant find medicated food, what is the best water treatment I should use? It looks like there are lots out there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Smiley

I would get an Water treatment with the ingredient Malachite Green. Ive been on a couple sites and they say it works the best.

Keep going with the salt, try adding a heater if you have one to raise the temp.
And look online for the medicated pellets, they're made by Jungle and they come in anti-parasite and anti-bacteria. I understand that it's hard, ich is such an annoying disease :/ (But be happy it's not Velvet!!!!)

Hi guys, I did another gravel vacuum and the white spots didnt come back today.  I am proud of myself for keeping it "at bay" so to speak, I catch it right as it's starting, do water changes, add salt and vacuum the gravel and it seems to go away for a few days.  I might try RidIch first, I've heard good things about it.  If that doesn't do the trick, I am going to try the medicated food.  I have read quite a few articles about it and one mentioned that keeping the light off for a day or two after treating the water helps minimize the possibility of re-infection.  Is there any truth to this?  Unfortunately I dont have a heater for my tank, I will get one eventually if these steps dont work.  On a side note, my fish have gotten a lot bigger Smiley Even my boyfriend who likes the fish but is somewhat indifferent called them cute the other day Smiley  My bigger oranda's wen has grown and he's got a chubby little belly...they make me so happy Smiley

I don't know about the lights-tip. Some say it works for velvet infections. I haven't treated any severe cases of ich in my days actually, so I don't have too much experience with it, unfortunately. You could always try! Smiley

Hope that medicine is going to work for you! Good luck Smiley
I'm glad that the fish are growing Wink I'd love to see some photos once this is all over Smiley

it's been 3 days since I've been using RidIch and vacuuming the gravel + 25% water change...so far so good.  I'm going to keep it up for another 2 days and they cross my fingers that it stays gone!!
