Hey Minde which water changer do you use again? Sorry I think you told me somewhere along the line but I don't remember Huh

Also how exactly does it work?
And would there be any problem using one from America in Australia? I ask because as far as I am aware you can't by them in Australia.

Hi Abbie,
I use the Aqueon water changer, 50 ft one.
It hooks up to the sink, but with our sink we had to use an adapter which you can get at any hardware type store.
You run water and it creates a vacuum and then sucks and vacuums the gravel or bottom of the tank as it takes water out.  The water runs into the sink and down the drain.  When you've taken the amount of water out of the tank and vacuumed the gravel enough just take the changer out.  We always let it keep sucking until it is empty.  Then you go to the sink and adjust your water temperature and then flip the switch on the part connected to the faucet.  Then fill your aquarium with the fresh clean water coming out.  I usually set the water changer head under the rim, so I can put water treatments in and my plant food etc. while it is filling.  Then when full, youjust flip the switch on the filler handle and shut it off.  Go back to sink and flip the switch by the faucet then when water changer is empty of water you turn water off and disconnect it.  I don't know why it wouldn't work
in canada.

I like the crazy stick bug man LOL, crazy fish lady a.k.a. fish mommy. I get called the crazy bird lady and plant lady well not always 'crazy' but generally most of the time Wink If I do get another BIG aquarium, I could see being called that eventually too.

To me it is a term of endearment from friends that see my passion for these animals and seek out help from me when they cross paths with them either in the wild or domesticated. I love it Grin

Wish I had the courage to swim in lakes or oceans but maybe one day. For now I stick to the big tank idea  Grin

Anyone have one of those Bio orbs?? I was thinking of getting a Betta one of these days or maybe a few tropicals and wondered if you have any feedback about this tank - pros and cons and so on. Does it come with everything you need to start with?

Okay, where do you all keep those tanks? I'm thinking about moving my couch out of my living room and replacing it with a wall of tanks, like they have at the LFS.  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Nossie has got one.
But at the same time if you get a big enough bowl which holds at least 6-7 l there are those little round UG filters available, you can fill their chamber with carbon, connect it to a pump. It is like an aerator at the same time and the outcoming airbubbled drag the water through the filter.
Cover it with nice gravel, get a small log if you like it, a lucky bamboo and/or another small plant, fill it with water (conditioned for bettas, etc) and you can add your darling betta straight away.
( It works the same like a Biorb, but is less expensive ) Wink

Oh that's right I forgot Hanna, I will have a good look around the lfs's for a set up like this. I really love the look of the orbs but they are a bit pricey. Maybe I get lucky with lucky bamboo in hand and find one on sale Grin Need a few little pumps too. The one on Jilly's tank took a s.h.i.t. fit and melted down. No worries as she will be moving soon to the big cube woohoo and I have a lead on some peeps who may need a home for a big goldie of there's...fins crossed. They didn't seem to know much about him but that he/she is big and they've had it for several years, said it's very healthy but they plan to move so there could be a mature friend for Jilly after all ♥

wow, that's great April!!  It's always nice to adopt as I just did a shxt load LOL! Wink Cheesy
So many fish out there that need homes. Wink
You might consider also, having a look for a bowl at goodwill or salvation army, resale shops, yard sales (doubt there are many this time of year), or estate sales!! LOL my favorite! Wink

April, those glass bowls are cheaper at Walmart, Kmart, BigW, just have a look in the house and home department. Some 2$ stores may have them too, but a bit more than $2..lol.. We payed for ours only $12. The little round UG filter costs $8,-- then you only need gravel, a small log and a plant. The lucky bamboo was only
$7,--. So it is fairly cheap to set it up like this. Wink

I am excited for you if you can get a lovely boy for Jilly Wink

April, I got one! Grin

And there's activated carbon already in the filter cartridge Smiley (However, stubborn as I am, I always pour away the carbon :C)
I'd say it's perfect for smaller fish! I've got the 8 gallon one, but there's also a 4 gal and a 16 gal available, I figured I'd buy a 4 gal for Bruce, but he seems much happier in this filter-less bowl o_o He's showing off his fins much more Smiley
And you should also avoid feeding sinking food because the substrate in the orb has to be really coarse and everything just falls in between the rocks :C

I will keep some guppies or something in the biorb though! Cheesy

You guys put my stuff to shame right now. hehe

I am just getting back into the hobby so I'm lacking in fish right now.

75g in wall tank with around 23 feeder goldfish, its still cycling.  This use to be a saltwater tank a few years back.  Husband was badly burned at work and spent a long time recovering with surgeries and therapy so we lost our fish due to me not being able to keep up with everything, I feel horrible about this but he and the kids had to come first. Sad

10g empty now
20g empty now
  5g empty now

Plan on putting some pretty goldfish of some sort in the 75g once it cycles and taking the feeders back to my lfs.  Really great guy that owns the store and will trade out fish anytime.  I will post in another thread but I wanted to ask any advice before I get too far ahead of myself here.  I had goldfish when I was a child so its been a loooong time. haha I'm 31 now.  Saltwater was very different than freshwater so I have lots of questions still.

Nice to see so many people here that love goldfish!  My husband wasn't fond of the idea of this new tank idea but I love to watch goldfish so I hope it turns out as well as I have it in my head. Smiley

Hi bel,
Welcome!
I guess I'll be the first to say that you don't have to use feeder goldfish to cycle a tank, as you can do a fishless cycling. Undecided
If you have a look around, you will see where this has been addressed in different threads.
There are alot of good people here to help you get back in the hobby.  Yes, we are the enablers! Wink Cheesy
And there are alot of good threads and articles which you will want to read!
I suggest you read and then post any questions you might have!
Someone will answer and try to help. Smiley

Hi Bel, welcome  to our little but growing community.
As Mindemae said, it is not needed to use feeder fish for cycling, but now you've got them, you may want to keep them as they can develop into little golden sweeties,  Wink

Browse the forum, there are a few stickies important to read, also on the homepage you should browse the different articles.
Keep us updated, and yes we get you back into the hobby Cheesy

Thank you for the sweet welcomes!

I was too late on figuring out that I could cycle without my feeders unfortunately.  This must be very new as I did have tropical fish maybe 6 years back and used hardy fish to cycle with then too, pet store told me to do it, get em hehe.  I will have to read up more about this as I plan on putting a smaller saltwater tank in my office one day, 30 to 40g I'm thinking with smaller saltwater fish and maybe some corals.  Need to see how to cycle this now.  Its like I'm so far behind.

I'm trying to read, read, read.  Going through threads here looking for some answers so I don't bother you guys to death with a zillion questions.  I feel like a complete noob again. lol
