When my dwarf chichlid died I noticed he had little red strands sticking out of his abal hole and I just noticed today that one of my fry has the same thing, so I looked it up and from what I can find out it is a parasite called camallanus. It also says that the best treatment is fenbendazole which is found in panacur for dogs. Has anyone here ever had dealing with this parasite? And if so would the panacur paste for rabbits work just aswell as the dog panacur?

Vicky, I don't know the answer to this, but I suggest you try the fishkeeping forum where you are more likely to find an expert on this

I manage to get some advice in another forum. I ordered the treatment and it arrived yesterday, I treated them today. So fingers crossed it will work. So far the fry that has it has done very well. When my dwarf cichlid had it I checked him the morning and there was nothing, checked him at night and saw the red strands at his anal hole and he didn't survive he night. My fry has had it a week and is still swimming strongly and eating. I don't know why he has coped better with it.

Yeh. It has worked really well. I have to treat them again in 2 weeks time incase any eggs survived. One of my fish did flip upside down and was upside down on the bottom of the tank for a day or two, so I moved her to my 28L breeding tank and treated her with melafix and feed her some frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. She was better within a few days and is now back in the 180L with her sisters.

Thanks. I did loose the fry that had them which was sad and one or two are having some bouyance issues after the second treatment but seem to be doing ok. I fed them some frozen bloodworm and I will feed them some peas tonight as they seem to be constipated.

Fenbendazole is what one fellow highly recommends. He said he fought the worms for a year before he finally stopped them with this med. Tried everything he could get his hands on and nothing was working till he got the Fenbendazole...Good luck...

The treatement I used seems to have worked it has just stressed out a couple of fish this time around causing constipation and some bouancy issues. Other than that everyone is fine.
