Fish had accident
«
on:
April 01, 2010, 05:11:43 AM »
Hi Guys,
just had a shock when I wanted to look again at my babies. Seen one fish and a rock with a tailfin not moving.
HE's STUCK I yelled and quick got the tank cover off reached into the water, lifted the stone up.
Fishie was stuck in the rockhole, but put the reverse gear in and managed to come out.
Result: shocked fish, slow, scales scraped off, mainly in front of the back fin, some on the sides.
He/she swims slow in the middle of the tank, I gave only little flakes, fishie showed old temper, ate quick, but then slow again, still swimming arround though.
Should I give a salt tonic? to keep bad bacteria down? can he/she get an infection from that injury? Should I use Vita Pet Multi Cure (Malachite Green)? This is meant to be used against fungal and bacterial infection, velvet disease?
I am grateful for anny suggestion, advise THANKS GUYZ

Just to update: when he/she managed to get out you should have seen the expression on his/her face. Looked like a squirrel.
When I approach the tank now fishie is getting a little bit quicker, comes to the front and wants to beg.
I could cry seing my baby like this

Hanna,
So sorry to hear about your fish!
MELAFIX is the best for treating wounds!!! It has natural tea tree oil in it. Just use as directed on the bottle.
Also adding aquarium salt...1 TBS per 5 gallons will help as well.
Hope he gets better soon!

Oww, poor fishie... :C
My mom's fish has been hurt a bit too on his tailfin, all torn and bloody when I came home yesterday! Gave him a dose of some bacteria-killing medicine containing a few antibiotics and methylene blue. He seems to be better already today (:
This medicine is the kind we've been treating wounds with all the time and it's been all the fish needed. And since yours isn't even bloody, but "only" lost a few scales, I don't think you need to treat him with too fierce medicines for now. But like Mindemae said, some antibiotic for preventive purpose might be good. Just keep an eye on him too (:
Hope he'll get better (:

I would reiterate what Nossie and Mindemae said, but that would just be redundant. So, I really hope your baby gets better soon, it's unfortunate that that happened to your fishy...

THANKS so much for all your support.
Hope I can get Melafix today, as most shops are closed today on GodFriday.
I gave salt for now, did not use the other medication yet as I thought it may be too much.
Hope my baby learned and won't explore rockholes anymore.
He/she seems to be better, swims quicker and couldn't wait to have brekkie.
Will keep you updated

Today I'll add the last dose to the tank (: He seems really happy and well already! And the other fish don't seem to think that his tail is that tasty anymore...
I think that salt should help pretty much actually... you can always try treating him with that for starters and see if he's getting better! If not, I guess Melafix would be a good solution (:
And I was about to say, that with goldfish it's pretty good to keep decorations without holes, as the goldfish grow pretty fast and can get stuck in them. Well, like you've seen (: So if it's a rock formation you made yourself, I'd try to change it a bit so the hole would be big enough for them to easily get through, or too small for them to even get their noses in

Hi Nossie,
Humphrey is doing fine, he is quick again and couldn't wait to get his food. We decided him to be Humphrey... a brave man exploring the unknown... but now he is keeping away from that hole.
He's moving the gravel arround like in "old" days, he looks a bit haggert with no scales on his back and sides, but he is very alive, joining Hepsiba digging and moving the gravel, paddling "wildly" with his little fins, looking for FOOD, begging for FOOD
I treated with salt for now. Hope he really recovered, poor guy was shellshocked.
Next waterchange is due this weekend again, I will fill that hole with gravel and pebbles, or put a plant in it. We bought those stones from the petshop. My husband said today "such a dickhead Boris, wanted to swim through that hole and did not realize it was too small" ... maybe there was sth looking like FOOD
Tomorrow we'll drive to Brisbane, will get some Melafix too. I intend to use it as well, just to get his tissue growing back quicker and to make sure that there is no bacteria or fungus to harm him.
Isn't it such a big relief that our fishies are doing well again? Just keep fingers crossed they'll stay well too

LOL! No, not a "dickhead" tell your hubby that the fish is a pea-brain! Which is about the size of their brains which doesn't exactly make them too smart!!
So glad to hear you will be filling that hole, since pea-brains usually do not learn their lesson the first time
Glad to hear he is on the mend and the melafix won't hurt to use. It is like a tonic that will just help heal his scrapes faster, and prevent a bacteria infection as well, and not bother the plants or the bacteria in the tank! I love Melafix!

Got Melafix in Brissie today,
will treat Humphrey asap, won't hurt Hepsiba either.
Humphrey got his old temper back, chasing Hepsiba, bumping gentle into her belly and swimming from her one side to the other.
With them missing scales he looks like an old battleship... hope when they grow back they will have the same golden orange shine

Humphrey did it again...
well he didn't get stuck in a hole, but he injured his dorsal fin. I cannot imagine where and how he did it but the first "bone" - silly me I don't know how to call it- looks like it is broken in the middle. It is not straight anymore, like in an angle of 110 degrees with a tiny white visible "dot".
He also came too close to the hose when I cleaned the gravel, his tailfin got a bit ripped, about 5mm
Humpsi swims allright, no worries, I also started to treat with Melafix. The rip in his fin seems to get smaller already, hard to judge because he's a quick swimmer. We'll see how the dorsal fin will heal
And yes, yesterday he ate a tiny snail which came off the Elodea

Hi Kat,
yes, lol, this is exactly what my hubby said, just 5 min ago.
I certainly keep an eye on him, this boy just knows how to do it. And that Melafix is just a wonder medicine, the rip in his tail fin is only half the size now, as I noticed this morning. The dorsal fin looks better too, but I doubt it will be straight again... but anyway I love our little battler
Also he must have enjoyed the snail...

Oh my, he's crazy... hope he's learning something from his injuries, though :'D
My little Creamie bumped her nose into the hose when I was cleaning the gravel once too, I got so worried I had to pick her up to see if she's alright :'c It didn't happen again after, but none of my fish gives a crap whenever I'm cleaning the substrate, I have to push them away from the gravel-cleaner sometimes! xD

yeah, they get used to our hands being in there, lol
Humpsi is doing fine, seemed he didn't bother at all, but mummy was worried.
They both dig and dig and dig or beg and beg and beg or nibbling the plants away, in between they hang their behinds into the bubble wall or wiggle their whole body when I am there looking at me... they are so funny and my hubby and me must laugh, how cute they behave
Feel like I want to cuddle them, sit with them in the tank....LOL hahahahahaha

Us too. Our have actually started crowding at one corner of the tank to watch us when we're on the couch. Sometimes they even wave their fins hello to us! I think they like that spot because they can see the TV, too- they seem to have favorite shows.

Now, our boy has a big scale hanging off his side, looks a bit nasty, I treat with Pima- and Melafix, 1 tablespoon salt in new water,
changed 20% today. But his behaviour is very normal. I keep an eye on him... again, lol.
Hope all will go well.
The rip in his tail fin closed up and his dorsal fin is almost straight. I still can notice a tiny whitish bump where it was broken.

Don't you think you might be overtreating your fish? I don't know if that's the case, but it seems to me that you add the full artillery of meds as soon as a scale is hanging loose :'D
He's probably alright (:

No, Nossie, as the ripped scale looks nasty, as if some little piece of flesh was ripped off as well at the scales root. Pimafix and Melafix are natural remedies, as you know, they don't do any harm. But if needed they help. So I decided to do this to prevent bacterial infection, as they pee and poo in that water too.

But how about this other fish of yours? If she doesn't have any problems/wounds that need to be prevented, a treatment can cause unessesary stress. Not like I think you're doing anything wrong, but it's quite normal that people do more harm than good when treating their fish for every single bump/rip in the fins. (Especially when there are other healthy fish in the tank.) You probably know that fish are quite sensitive to stress.

Both Melafix and Pimafix are a good choice to treat any wound. They are all natural made from the oils of trees in India. You can use it whenever you introduce a new fish to the tank or to prevent shock from any kind of stress.
It doesn't harm the benficial bacteria in the tank. I guess Melafix and Pimafix are more like a tonic than a antibiotic medication but they work! Maybe they boost the immune system of the fish and allows them to heal better themselves. I love them both and always keep them on hand. Aquarium salt is also a very natural remedy and tonic for stressed, wounded fish.

Nossie, maybe you can get it of ebay. But try ebay.com.uk.
When we still were living in Munich I ordered some natural remedies for ourselves. First from US and we couldn't have them, they wouldn't let it through at the customs. Then I ordered the same stuff from UK, all was fine, we could have it.
Cannot wait to see your Orandas
