Hi ok777,

Is Spaz eating now? Or nibbling at the plant?

But I am so sorry to say that according to the pic Spaz isn't happy. Spaz is hiding, looking for shelter.
Believe me a happy goldfish behaviour is different: they swim towards you, seem to be ALWAYS hungry, they wiggle at you when you approach the tank.

Please don't be disappointed now, the main thing is really start doing like we advised.

Get a water sample and get it testet at the petshop. Write down the exact results ( numbers ! ) and post them here.
I like to see the results for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH.

... and with your next money you may get Spaz another plant like Hornworth. He/she may start to nibble on that one. Ours almost mow it down when I put it in. You also can keep some of it in a vase floating in water and it starts to grow and sprout so you can grow your own. I started to to this and it grows beautifully.

BTW you can put some of that Hornworth in your betta tank too, grow it there and you must not buy it that often anymore.

Possibly, yes,  and this is another reason you should follow our advice asap.

I am not going crook at you at all, what I'd like to achieve to give you confidence and knowledge in proper fish keeping. Smiley
It may sound  difficult for you, but it is not.

If you know what new tank syndrome is, that might be the case, and this is why you really have to get the water tested, and fast!
That way, you'll know what to do about it Smiley It's of course better to buy yourself something to test the water with so you can do it every day, and change lots of water when needed!

Sorry about budging in and all, but you can just bring a small tube or container or something of the water to the pet store. You don't need to take the whole bowl.

Can't you go there by yourself? It is just a matter of taking a small cup full or a small jar.
Also as a responsible fish keeper you may explain your mum why it is important.
It is either that or you ask your mum to help you getting a test kit  OR Spaz will suffer and eventually die  Sad

According to the test kit: we use the API Master Test Kit for Freshwater. It is much cheaper to buy this one than the single ones.
It is a liquid one. We do not recommend paperstrips, as they are very inaccurate.

Sorry ok777 there is absolutely no way you can make one. You would have even less access to the chemicals needed to make it Tongue Can't you catch a bus, train, tram etc. there? Or next time your mum is going to the shops just tag along and go to the pet shop?

Well you'll just have to learn how to use the bus, there's no time like the present Smiley Look it up on the net and check with the bus driver to make sure you get off at the right stop. Of course you'll have no clue until you look it up. No-one said you have to lie to your mum either, just tell her the truth. You are almost seventeen. The test should definitely be free, if not it might be like one dollar or less. Start saving for everything else and writing that wish list for your birthday.

First of all, new tank syndrome is when the waste is accumulating in an uncycled tank that is fully stocked. In other words, a person has bought all the fish he/she wanted for the tank without cycling it. This will make the ammonia and nitrite rise and eventually kill the fish or at best make them sick. And since the person doesn't know what's wrong since he/she still doesn't know about cycling and hasn't been adviced to buy a test kit, most of the fish will be poisoned by their own waste.

Now, if you're practically 17 years old, no offense, I think you need to learn how to take a bus to the center of a town. It's not rocket science and it will come in handy later when you'll be older. So I say, stop making excuses, and just start taking care of some of your own business.

You might have, but you might have not.
It depends how "little" your cousin is, and how she will be able to care for Spaz.

Is spaz now in a cycled tank? Do she and her family know how to look after goldfish? Have the owned them in the past? If yes to these questions then you have done the right thing. Most importantly I think it would be best if Spaz was out of that bowl and in a cycled tank. If they don't know how to look after goldfish well tell them to start researching on the internet and in books.

You did SOMEthing. Your cousin won't be a miracle worker, and he/she will probably not know how to care for fish too much, but he'll get love, he will for sure. In the end, I can't help but feel like it's not a big deal, this fish was more or less doomed the day the pet shop sold him along with the bowl. But I do hope that he gets a good and caring home.
