Floating at the top of the tank

Is floating at the top of the tank to rest, normal?  She normally sleeps at the bottom of the tank.  She cannot seem to stay at the bottom without floating up, pretty quickly. 

I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.  Thank you

This is swim bladder when a fish has too much air in its in intestines. So what you do is you don't feed her for 2-3 days and then feed unskinned defrosted peas.

It does sound like a problem with its swim bladder.  Why type of goldfish is it?

Try varying its diet instead of feeding it only goldfish flakes.

She is a fancy goldfish.  I do feed her flakes only.  I gave her a deskinned pea last night, after watching her until 2am and today she is better.  I discovered this remedy after reading this website.  I am afraid to feed her anything.  Should I not feed her today and then feed her peas on Wednesday?  How many peas?  I know I am a real dummy when it comes to this stuff but I don't want to learn by error.  I need help and so does Lovely Rita Fancy Goldfish.

sounds like she's doing OK. Should this problem re-occur, then starve the fish for a day, then feed 1 or 2 peas for the next few days, then resume normal diet. it would be a good idea to feed your fish vegetables or romaine lettuce once per week.

Thanks.  Should I steam the romaine lettuce and examples of vegetables would be, summer squash, peas and broccoli?  Also, should I soak pellets before feeding to Rita?

Peas only need to be thawed, lettuce should be very lightly steamed, other veg should be steamed a bit more. Broccoli and summer squash are perfect, these four veg are usually what I feed my guys. I have also found unflavored canned pumpkin to help with swim bladder (two of my fish have occasional recurrences), just roll into a mouth-sized ball.

Merle was doing the same this morning, although he seems fine now. Should I still starve him or just keep a very close eye on him?

Spinach cooked till pulpy is also very good for constipation. So it duckweed as a tonic, and a bit of magnesium salts (Epsom) can also be helpful. They do need their veggies.

How much Epsom salts do you add to their tank and do you just leave the salt in their tank or do you do a water change after a few hours?  I have a 12 gallon tank with one fancy goldfish.

1/4 tsp per gallon is the usual as a tonic. I have seen some people use up to 1 teaspoon per gallon. You can leave it in until your next water change. Dissolve in tank water and then add it in slowly.
