Setting up a new tank

I just bought a 50 gallon tank for my two comets. They're rescues who've been living in a 20 gallon for a while now. I'm looking for advice on a stand that is cheap but will hold the weight, plants that they won't destroy, filters, lighting, etc. I want to make sure this tank is done right.
