Dear New Forum Members,
This is a great forum, with a core of excellent people who all are dedicated to help.
Therefore I like to post another "Sticky" which should basically appear in every sub-section of this forum, so it cannot be missed.
When you need help, please provide detailed information:
1. How big is your tank: Gal / litres
2. For how long has the tank been set up:
3. How many fish:
4. What kinf of fish:
5. What are the water parameters: Ammonia.........ppm
Nitrite..............ppm
Nitrate.............ppm
pH..........................
Temp...............degrees Celsius / Fahrenheit
6. How often do you perform water changes:
7. How big are your waterchanges: .....................%
8. What kind of waterconditioner are you using:
9. Do you add beneficial bacteria:
10. Symptoms your fish is showing:
11. Since when does your fish show these symptoms:
12. How is the normal behaviour of your fish:
13. How do the other fish behave:
14. Post pics of the sick fish:
15. Do you have a filter on your tank, what kind, how big (gallons per hour)
16. Do you provide extra aeration with an air pump and air stone/diffuser of some kind.
Please remember: the more detailed information you can give, the better help we can provide.
Don't have a test kit? Get a sample of water to your pet store ASAP and then post the numerical results.
BASIC RULE: 99% of illnesses in fish come from poor waterquality. To prevent illness make sure your fishes environment is pristine.
PLEASE COPY and paste in your new thread. Thanks

Maybe this would fit better in the Health/illness section? That's most likely where the n00bies will go for help first

Just thought that ALL stickies should appear in every section and maybe in another bulk colour, maybe red.

I think it should be in a separate place right at the start and in big red letter say:
PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING A HEALTH ISSUE
or something like that.

My goldfish are not eating, they are coming to the top of the pond and sucking in anything but then spitting it out again. It is an outside pond. 4 goldfish with plenty of area say, 4 square feet. We have added a new weed lately but have now taken it away as it was taking over the pond.
1. How big is your tank: Gal / litres
2. For how long has the tank been set up: 10 years approximately.
3. How many fish: 4
4. What kinf of fish: goldfish
5. What are the water parameters: Ammonia.........ppm
Nitrite..............ppm
Nitrate.............ppm
pH..........................
Temp...............degrees Celsius / Fahrenheit
6. How often do you perform water changes: when the water is unclear and too many leaves etc.
7. How big are your waterchanges: ..50%
8. What kind of waterconditioner are you using:
9. Do you add beneficial bacteria: no
10. Symptoms your fish is showing: not eating then sucking in food, mosquito larvea, weed and then spitting it out again. Not reacting quickly when touched or near them.
11. Since when does your fish show these symptoms: 1 week ago
12. How is the normal behaviour of your fish: quite frisky and eat well
13. How do the other fish behave: all doing the same thing
14. Post pics of the sick fish: not able
Please remember: the more detailed information you can give, the better help we can provide.
Don't have a test kit? Get a sample of water to your pet store ASAP and then post the numerical results.

Hi aussie goldfish! Welcome to the forum.
How many litres does your pond hold?
Please test your water for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate , pH. How warm is the pond water?
If you haven't got a testkit yet, please get a sample of water to your pet shop ASAP, have it tested and post the numerical results please. You also may buy a testkit ( API Mastertestkit for freshwater) while you are there.
What kind of filter do you use, how many litres of water does it turn per hour?
Waterchanges should be performed more regularly, the tests will give you the answer when to change. A clear and clean looking water doesn't mean that the waterquality is pristine.

Do you have a pump running in your pond?
If so how many GPH(gallons per hour) does it turn over?
Your fish are either acting that way from a drop in pH, (acidosis) caused by too many leaves which will lower pH considerably, oR from nitrates too high AND OR lack of oxygen from 1) too much debrie in the water OR 2)not enough water circulation with pump and filter. You need to agitate the water at the surface more for a better oxygen/gas exchange.
Best thing to do is do like Hanna suggested and test your water chemistry of your pond water. You have to for good pond maintenance. Then add more aeration to the pond after you do a water change according to the test results.

Hi, I have 3 goldfish (comet goldfish i think) and i think one of them (Malibu) has fin rot
(i think) his tail has been frayed and turned white at the ends.He has always been shy out of the three and the other two goldfish (Bubbles and MJ) both look healthy. I am going to buy fin rot medicine tomorrow but i would like to know if i should do a water change before i add the medicine and how much water shall i change and also if it is safe to add it to the tank with the two other fish in them. Also Bubbles keeps nipping at Malibu's tail and i dont know what to do to stop him? lol
I have a very large tank i'm not sure how big but its pretty huge, with a filter system in it, it has been set up for about a year now and ive had all 3 fishes for 2 years now. I do have a problem with the water going green quickly so i have been doing water changes every week, about a third of the water i remove and clean new water with tetra easybalancer. and try to feed them less than i usually do. Any other advice to combat green water?? I do water tests and i do find my nitrate levels are high but i have been struggling with keeping it down. Any advice for that as well?
Thanks!

First an foremost, you can't add medication to the tank if you don't know how big it is!!
It's very important that you get the correct dosage... You don't happen to have any 10 gallon (40-50 liter) plastic tub anywhere, do you? If so, you could set that up as a temporary quarantine system using water from your main tank.
You should definitely change at least 75% of the water when you'll add medicine, but most anti-bacterial medicines (like the ones treating fin rot) will destroy your filter bacteria and force you to cycle the tank again. Some people take out the filter media and let it lay in a bucket with an air stone while they treat their main systems, just to make sure.
Green water can be caused by a number of factors, too much light (that you'd keep it on for more than 10-12 hours a day), overfeeding, overstocking... you can measure your tank and then calculate the approximate volume pretty easily. You measure the length, depth and height and multiply these to get the volume
(You can also post the measurements here and we'll calculate it for you).
Are you vacuuming the gravel every time you change the water? If not, you're leaving a whole lot of waste in the tank so your water changes won't help much. Here's a link to a "how to maintain your tank"-thread
