Totally wet behind the ears ;)

Hello fellow goldfish lovers! I am completely wet behind the ears, lol Wink

I won two common goldfish at a festival saturday and I am not good at keeping a tank! I bought a little, and when I say little I mean tiny, tank with a lid--so the cats wont get them. I bought a Spongebob and a Pineapple House for them. I have some water conditioner and some fish flakes. I guess my question is how serious do you really have to be for these little guys to have a happy life. Im am on an extremely tight budget and dont really have the money to get fancy but I am an avid animal lover and couldnt bear to see them pass away! Not to mention I have a two year old that will be crushed Sad

Do they have to have gravel? Plants? Huh

I dont have any fancy equiptment to check PH levels and what not so I have to wing it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Diego and Dora would love you to help me out so they can keep on, keeping on Wink

In fact, the thing I'd suggest you getting would be a 30 gallon tank (or preferably bigger) for them babies of yours (: In a good "package" you could get the gravel, lamp and filter as a part of the bargain Wink

You have two common goldfish, and these two would grow to about a foot in length if cared for well, and they could live for up to 30 years! Therefore, these guys need a big, well filtered tank for them to move about! A 30 gallon is absolute minimum!
Goldfish are extremely dirty, and they need lots of oxygen to stay healthy. So if you really care for these fish of yours, you'll buy them a proper tank! (:

As far as affordable water testing, I know a lot of pet stores that sell fish will test your water for free. If you don't want to go in every week, the at-home kits are easy to use and very affordable. They just consist of chemically-treated strips of paper that you swish in your water. They change color and tell you what's going on with your water. Plants are also affordable- no more than a few U.S. dollars.

another chance to get a bigger tank, maybe complete with gravel, airstone, etc. could be ebay, or the local newspaper perhaps?
Or maybe the pet store does offer the facility to "rent" a tank?
They do offer this option here.

Paper strips to test the water chemistry are not really recommendd, as they are not accurate. A master test kit ( Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH ) may cost a bit more to start with, but lasts for a very long time. So it may be worse to think about this option too

hi
just look for a used or new tank/filter. start of with that make sure u get a good filter. they dont need rock or gravel. but they would like some decor.

i paid 10$ for my first 10 gallon tank and filter and made my own decor. the whole set up cost me about 20$ i still dont use gravel it is easyer to clean.

be warned though if u start keeping fish it will never stop. you will just want to upgrade all the time

I just started a 55 gallon saltwater tank it cost some money for sure more than 20$ anyway

hi
go find some drift wood or rocks that u like just make sure u rinse it out. if you have any quick dry cement thats were thing get cool.
get a plastic molding of a shape pour in the cement maybe put fake trees in the cement while it drys then u have a decor. that would sell in a store for 15$ or more thats how they make them. we did that. and made a bridge. for the bridge fill a plasti c contaner up with the cement and put a pop can in it and it would make the hole they go though
