I have adult Zebra Danio's in with my Fantail F.B. Toffee44 and she is 7 and half inches long, she could easily suck in a danio and swallow it but she doesn't seem interested... I also have them in with my ryukins and they all seem to get along ok... even when they steal the food practically out of the ryukins mouths (something like Homer Simpson trying to eat his packet of crisps and those little dogs keep stealing them)... I suppose if they were not fed for a while the danio's may look a bit more delectable... cheers

Danios are quite small little dears, I saw some at the pet shop yesterday!
There are now some baby snails in my little tub! I'm having to destroy any and all eggs I spot now, because I'm starting to see little dots that I'm pretty sure are babies, so there are several little ones in there
Do you guys know if these little pond snails would get on well with a betta fish?
Once lucky has moved into the bigger tank (once that's here and sorted) I was thinking, it wouldn't be that much more to get a heater/light for the 21 litre and have a betta in there or let the snails live in there by themselves. If I have no gravel and use silk plants, that I wash frequently to keep control of the population, I imagine they'd be fine in there.

Bettas are carnivores, and tend to be pretty cranky so they might actually harass/eat the snails. But you could always try if you'd like

I suppose a betta eating baby snails would keep the population under control?
I'm not sure a betta would be able to eat the adults, but I see what you mean, could harrass them.....
I think for now when Lucky moves out and quarantening is done for the bigger tank, I'll move the snails into the spare tank, leave a small amount of gravel in there (but take most of it out) and add in silk plants. Then I can easily clean the tank (snails are messy things!) and clean the silk plants regularly to get rid of unwated eggs
What about adding small cold water fish like minnows or danios? Would they get on with snails?
(Of course I'd research a bit more before buying anything!)

Pretty sure they do, I've kept Zebra Danios myself, don't remember if I had the little red snails at the same time, but these were all very nice and friendly little fish
Really beautiful colors too!

Well my pond snails are doing well! The little baby snails have grown, so I can actually see them all now yay!
I'm still un-decided on what to do with them in the 21 litre, I'm thinking maybe having a snail tank could be fun.
Not sure on wether they'd need the filter though? They've been doing fine in my tiny bucket with nothing for a while now.
Is it safe to assume snail species get along, as long as it's not an assasin snail?
I was only thinking it'd be nice to have apple snails, a larger breed along with the little ones. I'll look into it, but a snail tank is a nice idea as I would just need to feed them veg? I've been feeding my snails peas, zuchinni and crushed fish flakes mainly at the moment and they seem to be doing fine, they actually haven't touched the trimmings of plant that's in there with them.
So I'm beginnig to wonder if people over re act to snails in a tank? Who knows, I like my little snail family and I look forward to when the babies are all grown up

I think you should have a filter in the tank, if not for the snails to feel good (which they definitely would!), then for the fact that it's a lot easier keeping the tank clean with a filter

This is true... although I'm a little worried when I clean the gravel I'll suck babies up! I suppose that would be one way of keeping the population under control XD

They lay their eggs above the water....so catch the babies and put them in a large tupperware container. You should be able to raise them in there until they are big enough to escape your vacuuming

My bladder snails lay eggs everywhere XD So I'd have to get the eggs off the plants somehow without damaging them?
I am thinking of adding them to the main tank, but again sucking away babies will be a possible problem....

These snails breed like mad, so honestly, I wouldn't be very bothered in case I'd vacuum up a few eggs.
It doesn't need to be very complicated, and what would you do when they'd overpopulate the tank and eat everything you hold dear?
Vacuuming a few of them away would only be a good way to keep them somehow controlled (even if that won't help for long).

Hmmm yeah it's why I was thinking of having them in a tank by themselves with silk plants... But I'm not sure about adding them to the main tank either XD

I have no problem with apple snails in my tank..they don't eat healthy plants, they prefer to mop up any left-overs they can find..it's easy to remove eggs if they breed too much....but they don't breed as much at goldfish temperature...they tend to work the night-shift

Apple snails are fine, yeah
But Skwishee has this hoard of some tiny, productive snails too, and I've had some very similar annoying things in my tanks D:

Perhaps just keep them where they are for now then.... Also apart from eating plants and over populating, is there anything else bad that snails do to tanks?

Well assassins would solve that

But then I'd have to feed the assassin snail some how once it ate all my snail family

usually they achieve a predator/quarry balance. If there is a large pest snail population, the Assassins will breed well. This will still not be anywhere near as quickly as the pest snails breed though.(

Oh wow, thanks Scrivens, not sure how an assassin snail will do in a gravel tank, as it advises sandy substrate... but will keep that option in mind! When it says to keep them in groups, could I have say only 2 or 3 in that case?
It would be quite interesting to have a prey/predator relationship, it would save me having to deal with endless egg sacs and I'm sure in the bigger tank, I'd miss a lot of the Bladder snail ones XD
I don't mind too much, having the bladder snails on their own, I just don't understand why their hated so much? All I've gathered they do is occasionally eat plants and multiply like crazy?

Well, uninformed fish-keepers get a few snails and end up introducing a horde of destructive pests that multiply like mad, destroying the looks of their tanks. I'd be angry too in case I'd have a nicely planted tank and suddenly, it wouldn't be that nice after all having the plants full of holes
That's why most people are very careful with introducing snails to their tanks. Their eggs can also be unsightly, not to mention having the tank overrun by snails may ruin the impression.

Oh so its an aesthetic thing?
It's why I was thinking of having a snails tank with silk plants! I find the bladder snails to be quite beautiful.
The shells on my adult snails are simply gorgeous, I wish I had a decent enough camera to show you! Not to mention the baby ones are just adorable!
They are quite interesting to watch, the adult ones, when they need oxygen, don't climb the side of the tub to the surface, they actually glide very gracefully to the top and then glide back down. Not to mention they are so small, they glide under the waters surface!
And interestingly enough, I've had clippings of Cabomba floating in the tub with them (the plant they arrived on) and all they use it for is climbing on and laying eggs, it's still intact, which is why I question people saying they eat everything?
Mind you, I keep mine well fed on vegetables (I'll put left overs from whatever Lucky's having for dinner that day in like a pea, courgette, brocolli and it will be completely eaten in a few days!) and crushed flakes, so I imagine they have no need to eat the plant! Eggs aren't very noticeable... although I do destroy any eggs I find when I do their complete water change once a week.
Perhaps I'll go back to my snail tank idea then... I don't think live plants would be able to compete with Lucky and hungry snails as it would be difficult to feed them with Lucky around XD

They are a tad of a bother sliming around everywhere too, laying their eggs inside the filter and stuff, not fun to clean up. And they do make a mess on the glass, even the apple snails do :/
I had elodea with my snails, they didn't eat those much. Some kinds are simply worse than others, I guess?

Ah fair enough! I think you may be right about the plants Noss, I think I'll keep the snails in a tub, until I can sort out the little tank for them properly.
I've not noticed a lot of mess being caused by their 'slime' though? In all honesty the most mess in that tub is the poo!
They seem to be doing well in the tub, considering that the Bladder Snail can survive in stagnant and slow moving water, not to mention I assume the conditions are good, otherwise they wouldn't be laying eggs every week XD
Then later I will try and get some Apple or Ramshorns snails to live with them, ya know? Some larger aquatic snails.
I think with the different sized snails and some silk plants... a little filter, maybe some driftwood, a little air bubbler.... oh and some big rocks to cover the base of the silk plants... I think I'll avoid gravel simply so it well be less massacre on the babies!
Silk plants, filter and driftwood can be cleaned weekly, to minimise egg amounts....
Haha this is some ways off though XD But one day.... In my mind it looks quite nice at least
