Keeping Bettas

Ok, I'm interested now.

I keep looking at bettas at the LFS and I really like them. I am wondering though how safe is it to keep them in the small bowls I keep seeing. Surely they need more space. I understand that they come from shallow pools in Asia but surely a 10l bowl is just too small??


Also how do you go about heating a bowl that size?? The guy said I dont need a filter as long as I do regular water changes, if so how regulary do people do it, and are you bascially not cycling the tank?

Im very tempted to get one actually. But for now I'm just getting back into my goldies so sitting on my hands

I suggest the minimum is a 1 gallon bowl with a plant. Ive got my betta in a 10 gallon with a filter.

In a bowl I suggest changing the water every week 20%.
Theyr'e very low matenence fish!

If you'd keep the betta in a bowl, you'd have to change water a few times a week since it won't cycle. Just a small amount, like fantailer said, roughly 20-30%.

A betta does need space though. If you count it as 2 liters per 1 cm of fish, a betta needs a 14-15 liter tank/bowl Smiley
There are those baby Biorbs available, they're 15 liters and have a little undergravel filter Smiley You can also buy a small heater for those systems (planning on getting one for a future betta). Here's a link: (Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)
You can find these for pretty varying prices, but in case you find a used one, be sure to inspect it for scratches! These tanks are made from acrylic, so they get scratched much easier than glass and being full of scratches they won't look too attractive Smiley

I have an 8 gal c: Keeping platies in it for now. But I thought I'd let them move into the new 70 liter (with some cute plecos <3) and give the orb to one of my cousins Smiley They're really easy to maintain, and she always wanted fish... Wink

I have got friends that have had a lot of fatalities with those biorbs. "fish death trap" were her words.


Sooo tempted to get a betta tank *potters off to ebay*


But for now betta fish can wait need to get the goldies sorted out. I am in the UK so will defo need a heater is that right?

Thing about the biorbs is that you need to know how much the filter can take. It can easily take care of any tropical fish, but NOT goldfish, ever. I know in the pamphlets and everything that comes with them, they say that 3-6 small goldfish will live there D: I'd put the emphasis on "small". I'd like them to add that you can't keep goldfish in them :/ I've used mine only for quarantine in the cases of keeping goldfish in it, but boy, they make SUCH a mess! I have to clean it out all the time!

The problem your friend had was probably that she didn't cycle it and it might have been overstocked. I think you need some background knowledge to be able to keep fish in such small systems, again, they could add more information in the pamphlets...

Biorbs are a fish graveyard. They have undergravel filters and in my opinion are good for nothing more than a single Betta or 2-3 guppies or 2-3 white cloud mountain minnows.

bettas should have at least 2 gallons of water to be happy. They like to explore. they should also be kept with a heater (78 degrees F).
A filter is always better than no filter. There are plenty of good tanks out there for bettas, but of course, the good ones aren't cheap.
I have two bettas, one is in a two gallon Fluval Spec. great little tank with a huge filter and the heater can be hidden in the filter section.

the second betta lives in a home built 3 gallon cube (9"x9"x9") and has a small internal filter and a heater.

my choice in small heaters... pre-set to 78F, works for anything 2-5 gallons.

Bettas are fun pets and can be keep in any size tank I think it is better to keep them in a 5 gallon tank,but bowls and other such things is ok.
how to take care of a betta.
1.get a tank
if its a small tank use a mini filter any other size can use a 10 gallon filter.
2.put pebbles,sand,or what ever you are going to use down on the bottom of the tank.
I use pebbles
3.decors
put plants,drift wood,and hiding spots in your tank.
4.fish products
I buy fish products from API ,TopFin and Tetra.
5.the fish
you want a helthy welthy betta that means swiming not floating.no rips on fins.
to be contenued.
