Goldfish as Prizes - Petitions
« on: June 29, 2012, 09:17:05 AM »

Hey everyone!

I completely forget if I posted this petition as it's for UK residents only, but I'll post it again;
(Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

So any UK residents here, please sign, it is to amend the animal welfare act so no animal can be given as a prize.

I also found this one, I wanted to show you guys;

(Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

It is an international petition, so everyone here can sign, and is to stop goldfish from being won at fairs.

Whilst I completely agree with your sentiments, I do wonder what will happen to these fish if they are not given to the fairs. they'll probably be turned into fertilizer. It is I'm afraid a lose-lose situation. Sad

I agree with Scrivens. If you are a goldfish breeder then you dispose of culls.
Culls are killed bottom line.  Either fed to bigger fish as food or thrown away.
At least maybe some of these culls would find a decent home if bought or given to carnival/fair people.
I have seen responsible people doing the fish fair game.
They have the fish in large swimming pools with Air circulation and on hot days I've seen plastic bags of ice floating in the pools.  The glass bowls are filled with water and the fish are not placed in them.
You try to get a ping pong ball in one of the fishless, water filled bowls.
If you are successful, you get to pick out a fish which is placed in a plastic bag for your journey home.  If your not going home right away, they give you a coupon instead and you can come pick out a fish later before you go home.
The fair that comes to our town, also gives out to each customer, a run-off instructions on the care of goldfish and a small packet of food.  They also will give you a coupon saying how many fish you have won so you can pick them up later.  Our fish fair guy also, sells small aquariums, (plastic) for temporary housing until you can get something better for your fish.
I think it's all in how the fish game is run. There are more humane ways of doing it.

Minde, it sounds like the fairs are much better run, where you are.

The one I witnessed last year, the fish were given away in plastic bags or buckets, the kids were walking around with them in the middle of the day and it was rather warm. The fish stall were selling food and small fish bowls that must have been around 5 - 20 litres, not sure exactly on size. I don't know if anything was given in terms of water conditioner, but I saw no filters.
I also didn't see any one with care information.

One of the kids told me later at work, that their sibling had thrown their goldfish into the sink and it had died, so I wonder how many goldfish from that fair are still alive.
I wonder what would be more humane, killing the culls or giving them to fairs where it's pretty much a gamble as to wether they'll end up in good homes or be killed slowly by being kept in bad environments.
