Goldfish books.

Hi everyone.
I am hoping to get a really good goldfish book for Christmas and was wondering if you have any recommendations? I've been doing a bit of my own research but which ones do you own? Which ones do you wish you had? Or which ones have you heard good things about?
Any suggestions would be appreciated

When I experienced initial problems with Hump and Hep in their small tank I quickly bought;
GOLDFISH A Complete Pet Owner's Manual autor: marshall E. Ostrow ISBN 0-7641-1986-9
It covers the basics and helped me them times. It is not sth I'd recommend but it is not bad either... better than nothing and also inexpensive.
Later I bought: Encyclopedia of Aquarium & Pond Fish autor: David Alderton ISBN 978-0-7566-3678-4
Very informative, did cost almost AU$ 42.00 but well worth it.
It covers many many fish species but also lots about goldfish, also deseases-symptoms-treatment put in a very good table.

I currently own 2 goldfish books:
1. Goldfish A Pet Owner's Manual With a Special Chapter: Understanding Goldfish. Author: Marshall Ostrow
ISBN 0-8120-9016-0
* It helped me a lot when I first started.
2. Animal Planet Aquarium Care of Goldfish. Author: David E. Boruchowitz ISBN 978-0-7938-3700-7
* It's my favorite book. Here's a link: (

3. I would like to own a copy of this book: (

Hi Andrea,
If you like reading I recommend GOLDFISH GUIDE by Dr. Yoshiichi Matsui and Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod. (reads like a text book but very informative!)
I also recommend GOLDFISH by Goldfish Society of America. I don't know how many times I reach for this book if I have a question.
I would like to own: “The Manual of Fish Health”, ©2003 by Dr. Chris Andrews, Adrian Exell, and Dr. Deville Carrington.
This is book about fish keeping as it is easy to read, easy to understand, and covers all of the basics of good fish keeping from water quality to disease diagnosing and treatment. This book is worth its weight and gold and every person who enjoys the art of fish keeping should own a copy.

I've got a load of goldfish books, learning a little bit from each of them
I'd recommend "Fancy Goldfish" by Richard Hess and Dr. Erik Johnson. It contains quite advanced information, but once you start understanding it, it's something incredibly useful!
"Manual of Fish Health" by Chris Andrews, Adrian Exell and Dr. Deville Carrington, it contains awesome information about how the body of a fish works and about all kinds of diseases and pests in an aquarium.
Those would be my favorite books, other than that, I've got a few smaller, simpler books as well, but they're only covering the basics on goldfish keeping, so it may be less interesting

Thanks guys
I have written down a little list now and may have to get more than one. I'll have to start looking which ones I can get but amazon should have most of them.

Nossie I just looked both of those up tonight! They are available on amazon for a greatly reduced prices I think. Is yours a hardcover? Maybe I was looking at the paperback but either way they look like fantastic books! Have you read or heard of "Setting up a Tropical Aquarium" week-by-week by Stuart Thraves? I quickly glanced at it as well.

April: Both of them are hardcover, yes
I haven't heard of that tropical book, how many pages does it have?
I usually judge my books by the amount of pages, lol xD More pages = More info xD

Hey guys, I too have been looking for books!!
Are there any new titles that have been published since this thread?
I popped into the main library yesterday on a quest for goldfish books and was severely dissapointed
They had books on horses, ferrets, chickens, pigs, cats, dogs, koi, but goldfish? Errrr no!
I found one book by Dorling Kindersley about all sorts of fish you can keep in an aquarium it had lots of information about tropical, marine, cold marine and you know what it said for goldfish? Their size varies because a goldfish grows to the size of its environment, so they couldn't give guidelines on suitable aquariums
I could have thrown the **** thing out the window!
So libraries are useless and I've tried looking in Waterstones, they're just as useless!
I've taken note of the recommendations already made, but didn't know if there were any new books out

Libraries tend to have close to ancient books... general aquarium books have disappointed me even since they've been printed in the 90's
But the One I recommended, the "Fancy Goldfish" is something still revered as the best book on goldfish ever made to date

You mean this book?

How much of the information could I apply to single tailed goldfish?
I like the sound of these two books as well that have been mentioned;
Goldfish (Complete Pet Owner's Manual) and Animal Planet: Aquarium Care of Goldfish
And this one seems quite interesting (

Some of the books seem to be crazy cheap on amazon (some sellers have them for a penny!) so I might try and get one or two at christmas.

Why, all of it of course
Essentially, there isn't much difference between single-tailed and fancy goldfish aside from possibly tank space and/or size.
In that book they count comets, shubunkins, wakins and jikins as fancy goldfish as well
The Coldwater fish keeping-book will be pretty obsolete, since it looks like a pretty old book and you're getting (I think?) both the Aquarium care of Goldfish and Fancy Goldfish books

Hmm yeah I see what you mean! I only wish the books were in librarys so I could look at them!
I think I may just get the Fancy Goldfish book at christmas, if it covers everything the basic guide books do and more? Some sellers have it for £20 so that's not too bad, if it's such a comprehensive guide of everything.
And I just liked the Coldwater Fishkeeping book because it had other cold water fish in it as well as Goldfish.
I just like looking at fish pictures really! Infact I have a book I picked up in a charity shop, it's all about marine fish for an aquarium, of course I'll never probably have a marine aquarium but it was 75p so I just brought it for the pictures to look at
Plus I can use it as reference for art work
