Goldfish Bowls
« on: June 14, 2010, 03:06:55 PM »

I know goldfish bowls are not recommended for fish, but it was the only thing I had on such short notice since I unexpectedly got a fish yesterday.  What size tank would be good for a small goldfish about an inch and a half long?
Embarrassed  I don't know much about fish.

Any advice and help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!  Cheesy

for one goldfish, it is reccomended that you get 10 gallons. I know goldfish bowls are convienient, but they should really only be temporary (and by temproary I mean REALLY temporary) homes for the fish. Smiley But I guess you knew that. so yea, minimum is ten gallons per fish. that will allow sufficient room to grow Smiley

At least 10 gallons but I am guessing your little fish is a common or a comet and they can grow quite large so he won't stay 1-1 1/2 inches for very long. Wink
After awhile you might want to get another fish.  Goldfish are social creatures and they like to have other goldfish around.   So I'm going to tell you to get the biggest tank that you can afford.  Look for a used tank set-up.  Re-sale shops, yard sales, classified ads, online and pet stores sometimes sell used tanks or have bulletin boards where people can post items for sale. Average rule about 10 gallons per fish. We got our fish (2 comets) in March this year, they were only 2 or max 2.5 inches small, now they are about 4 inches.
Soon -hopefully- we will move them into a 43 gallon tank. They are very fast swimmers, so they need room to take off .... Smiley

yea comets need room to swim swim swim. Actually all fish do. They are active swimmmers and need room to twiist, turn and swim around XD so yea, get the biggest tank you can afford (and that space allows.. apparently there are some nice tanks that come with stands for a reasonable price)

Wandafish, have a look in the post in Tank and Equipment " Our new Tank" . You'll see the size we bought for our 2 fishies, so you can have some idea how big a space they need. Eventually we'll get 2 more but this is maximum for this tanksize.

Hope this helps.

We bought it 2nd hand. Sure you will be able to find sth similar, just look arround, ask in your local pet shop, they may know too.
Look it up in newspapers, etc  Smiley
