Crud! (literally) on my Sponge Filter?
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:22:38 PM »

Ok so right now my old sponge filter is falling apart so I purchased a brand new one and am cycling them both at the same time to transfer the bacteria. It is now the third week of cycling the new filter (but I still have the old one pumping so I don't just get rid of all my beneficial bacteria) and suddenly a white film is appearing on the suction cup of my new filter. Is this some sort of weird bacteria bloom that I need to clean off? or should I just keep letting it do its thing and leave it alone? There is no salt, meds, or anything else in the tank water that would cause this.

Any comments appreciated.  Smiley

I got no idea what that is o___o
It reminds me of the goo that collects inside my filters, but that's brown D: I'd just wipe it off for cosmetic reasons, I doubt it's harmful Smiley

Hmmm. Most of the "goo" I find in my tank is usually brown as well...I have never seen anything like this before, so I was naturally uncertain whether I should leave it or scrape it off. If it was some sort of good bacteria struggling to establish on the filter I didn't want to ruin it! The fish seem to have no interest in it and it doesn't seem to be altering the water quality at all, so I'm at a loss.  Huh Honestly I just encounter the strangest things once I think everything is normal.

Seems that way! :'D
Yesterday I was cleaning the tubing and suction cups for the external filter and then I found this white goo inside one of the cups, it had been against the glass at some point it seemed, wonder if it's the same?

Could be the same as what I have!  Undecided Very strange...I wanted to try to clean it off during my next tank cleaning as I don't think it has to be in there. But then, it's not really doing much harm...

Maybe I'll try googling "white slime on tank equipment" and see what comes up, then let y'all know what I find.

Thats an interesting bit of bizo you have growing there Goldie, never seen anything like it before other than maybe its some sort calcium growth or salt deposits, although it does look like it grows in a similar fashion to mold... cheers

Underwater mold, interesting.  Tongue I scrubbed it off at my tank cleaning last week and it came off easily. No idea what it was but glad it's gone now...thanks all for your input.  Smiley

Could it be possible that flakes are getting caught round the back of the filter and turning into crud? Undecided

That would be a good explaination, if I'd fed fish flakes lately. I haven't for the past...month maybe? I really don't know what it could be. +.+ Fortunately it hasn't come back, though it is slimy in texture. Perhaps it was just a visible bacteria bloom during the cycling process or something...still not done cycling the new filter. I hope it doesnt cause some weird glitch in my parameters.

Maybe some of the beneficial bacteria you added lumped together like that? Smiley

Actually, I don't add BB to my tank...I only use Prime whenever I have a freak ammonia problem or something and that has always solved the issue, though I think that is something I should try while cycling this new additional filter. Might help speed up the process.  Smiley
