Our new little goldfish has some white, salt grain type of spots. It's probably ich so we need to treat him for it. Right now he's on a prazi treatment. Hubby brought home some Jungle Ich clear, but I'm wondering when we start that treatment for him after the prazi. Also, I have a heater for the ten gallon, so should I use that to? and do we use salt along with ich medications?

Also, how do we know when it is really gone? Does this stuff come back?

This page looks good. So far I'm just using salt, and trying to get our heater to work to raise the temp up. It's about 78* right now.

Of course I haven't treated ich successfully yet but I would either treat again or change the treatment...don't have enough experience to advise you but I'm interested in how ich is treated and if it comes back, ect. Also how long treatments last and when they can be considered to be free of it.

Mearwynna: A good rule of thumb when treating for ich is to leave the salt in for at least two weeks even if the symptoms are all gone. Did you add one teaspoon per gallon when you dosed? This is the proper dosage when dealing with ich Salt and raised temperature should do it. You don't have to add the medication at all.

How did you end up using the salt?

I've been reading a couple of different forums and koko's seem to suggest that salt is used as a .3% solution. So basically 3 tsp for every gallon. 1/3 of the total dose is put in at 12 hour intervals and the temp is raised at the same time. (the salt is replaced if water is removed.)  However they don't tell you how long to use it for. Theya lso seem to think prazi can be used at the same time as salt, for flukes.

Yes, probably. Of course fish coming from stores are often not so well treated. the tank he was in was so crowded and the filter currant was super strong, so all these little fish were just blowing about in the currant. He's pretty vigorous though. I think he has a strong will to live.

Sad news, the female white cloud died today. I think the salt was too much for her. Since all the white spots were gone I lowered the salt by half. a .3 solution became a 1.5 solution...I was nervous about using so much...and now I know that small fish can't handle it. humph. I will probably lower it a bit more but keep the heat going for a while longer. He still needs a few more prazi rounds.
