Treating ich
«

Our new little goldfish has some white, salt grain type of spots. It's probably ich so we need to treat him for it. Right now he's on a prazi treatment. Hubby brought home some Jungle Ich clear, but I'm wondering when we start that treatment for him after the prazi. Also, I have a heater for the ten gallon, so should I use that to? and do we use salt along with ich medications?
Also, how do we know when it is really gone? Does this stuff come back?

This page should tell you the various treatments that you might use to cure Ich

This page looks good. So far I'm just using salt, and trying to get our heater to work to raise the temp up. It's about 78* right now.

Ich has come back in my tank! I think it is from Daryl as the fish came into contact with him before he died from it! According to that post plecos can suffer from both salt and White spot treatment, my butterfly plecos have been treated with it before and were fine and there is salt in there at the moment! If the treatment didn't effect them before do you think they will be ok to treat with it again? I only ask because I know they can be carriers and can get it and I don't want to keep passing it backwards and forwards!

Of course I haven't treated ich successfully yet but I would either treat again or change the treatment...don't have enough experience to advise you but I'm interested in how ich is treated and if it comes back, ect. Also how long treatments last and when they can be considered to be free of it.

Vicloz about the butterfly plecos, this may sound silly, but are they definitley butterfly plecos or are they hillstream loaches?
If they look like that ^^ they are in fact hillstream loaches, while they are sometimes called 'pleco' they are actually loaches.

I apologise if I am completely wrong, it was just something that occurred to me XD

Mearwynna: A good rule of thumb when treating for ich is to leave the salt in for at least two weeks even if the symptoms are all gone. Did you add one teaspoon per gallon when you dosed? This is the proper dosage when dealing with ich
Salt and raised temperature should do it. You don't have to add the medication at all.

Nossie I already have the White spot medication and salt hasn't worked for me in the past but after I have used the White spot treatment for the duration of the treatment and then changed the water do you think I should add salt to the water again for a while just to help or leave it?

How did you end up using the salt?
I've been reading a couple of different forums and koko's seem to suggest that salt is used as a .3% solution. So basically 3 tsp for every gallon. 1/3 of the total dose is put in at 12 hour intervals and the temp is raised at the same time. (the salt is replaced if water is removed.) However they don't tell you how long to use it for. Theya lso seem to think prazi can be used at the same time as salt, for flukes.

The variable doses leave me confused. How much salt is enough, what if it's not enough, or too much?
Now that I have some time to post. This little guy also had a red spot on his side yesterday and the day before that is black looking now. I wonder if that would be a healing wound? It did look like he had patch of missing scales. I am also noticing that his fins are a bit ragged. Maybe that would be some fin rot, or just stress from bad conditions?
Since I was just looking him over I can see that most of the white spots are off him now. I did vac the bottom of the tank this morning. I wonder if I should do it again.

He has probably ripped them whilst rubbing up against things to remove the White spots! Salt treatment will help them heal in time!

Yes, probably. Of course fish coming from stores are often not so well treated. the tank he was in was so crowded and the filter currant was super strong, so all these little fish were just blowing about in the currant. He's pretty vigorous though. I think he has a strong will to live.
Sad news, the female white cloud died today. I think the salt was too much for her. Since all the white spots were gone I lowered the salt by half. a .3 solution became a 1.5 solution...I was nervous about using so much...and now I know that small fish can't handle it. humph. I will probably lower it a bit more but keep the heat going for a while longer. He still needs a few more prazi rounds.

Goldfish can handle a .9% solution, no problem there! Just keep the salt level constant or else you will get problems :/ It irritates them while it changes so please stick to the .3% for the entire 2 weeks!
