I have a question - what would be better for a fish, living in a overcrowded feeder fish tank and then being eaten or living in an un-cycled tank?  I always feel so bad for the feeder fish.

Both things would kill the fish, I mean, a feeder fish lives in the overcrowded tank until someone buys it, and if that someone is a n00b who doesn't know about the nitrogen cycle, the fish will die from stress and probable disease from the previous tank anyway. And that's why one shouldn't buy a feeder fish as a first fish, because they're usually carrying a load of parasites and infections already by the time you bag it and bring it home. Of course, you can make a feeder fish happy in a tank and live for years, but for that, you need to know what you're doing.

So, it would be better for the fish to be eaten, I think Cheesy

In general a quick death is better than a long one.... for either humans or animals.

But, as Nossie said,  providing that the person who gets them really KNOWS what he/she is doing - even with an uncycled tank - feeder fish can be rescued and they can live a long and happy life. With an uncycled tank there is need of cycle aids, like "Stability" from Seachem, medication to boost the fish immune system, strict and regular testing and waterchanges according to the testresults. It is HUGE responsibility and work

Wandafish, I know the feeling... if I could, I would rescue all poor fishies, cats, dogs, etc out there...

Now, if you are confident that you want to do it, start the cycle without fish... as you cannot rescue ALL poor things...
Let us know how the cycle goes on and we help you through, we'll let you know when it will be safe to start adding the first fish.

While I was recently on vacation, I stopped into a Petco and they have a huge tank set up for fish who's owners don't want them anymore, so they bring them into Petco and Petco adopts them out.  My sister got a gorgeous big old fantail for $5.  All the money from the adopt a fish program is given to their pet shelter charities.  I think it's a great idea.  I might adopt a fish sometime too. Smiley

Minde: That sounds great! Smiley I got a fish like that myself, my Mr. Big (The black moor) was a fish that someone had given away to the pet store.
