Goldfish/Scales look dry and/or dull

My two goldfish's scales look rather ashy and/or dull.  They are spending more time at the bottom as well.  We just introduced a couple snails and a platapus (?..spelling) to the tank recently to help with the algae. Is this dry look serious?

It is pretty serious. It means that there's something in the water irritating your fish.
You should take out 50% of the tank water and add some nice fresh water to it, that should help the fish perk up for now.

In the meantime I have a number of questions for you that I'd prefer if you answered asap.
1. How big is the tank? Do you have other fish in it?
2. How long have you had the tank?
3. How often do you change the water and how much do you replace? Do you use a water conditioner and beneficial bacteria?
4. What kind of filtration do you have on the tank?
5. Do you regularly test the water? If so, what's your pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate values?
6. When you say "platapus", what do you mean? I tried googling it and it showed a "platYpus" as in, those weird beavers with beaks?

I would assume, like fantailer it means a pleco of some sort, I can hardly imagine a platypus being sold in the aquatic trade let alone being in a tank with goldfish!

Bandmom, do you mean one of these?

Note: The picture Skwishee posted is of a Sailfin pleco which, in my experience, can't be kept with goldfish!

Yep, common Ancistrus Smiley Those have been tried and proven Cheesy Had them with goldfish for years, and they don't need much space since they're pretty small fish Smiley

ha, beavers with beaks, good one... I have only seen a couple of them in my time and they were in a sanctuary... when the first duck billed platypus was described and illustrated, everyone thought it was some sort of prank and dismissed it outright. It wasn't till the first specimen was taken back to the old country (England) that they discovered it was real. Unfortunately it's future looks bleak, hard to breed in captivity and not very numerous in number. CHeers all. > Ron.

Never seen one in real life. But they must be shy like other plecos.
