Goldie Tank Re-Do
« on: December 11, 2010, 08:06:02 PM »

Hey all! I'm planning on doing a complete re-do of my goldie tank, since when I started out I knew, like, nada about goldfish and now I want to revamp the whole thing! so over X-mas break I'm going to do the following. Tell me what you think!

- CLEAN THE WHOLE THING! (I mean honestly, it looks pretty disgusting right now)
- New Gravel (what do you think of black with a few white pieces and gems here and there???)
- New Decorations (like maybe a sunken ship, or possibly an archway of some sort)
- Real Plants! YAY! (something like Anubias, and maybe some Java fern. I'd like the tank to be pretty well planted)

Any suggestions? I'd like to leave a column of space at the front of the tank for the goldies to swim around in  Smiley  Cheesy

Please read what I said in the other post, I'm sure everyone will agree with me. How does it look disgusting? As it may look disgusting to you but the fish may love it  Wink You could re-decorate it by just taking everything out BUT leave the gravel and filter only. I guess you can replace the gravel, but I wouldn't.

Re-vamp it just by taking out any decorations you have in there and replacing them with plants and the new decorations Smiley What colour is your gravel now?

yup, I made a reply to the other post.
true, it's probably not "disgusting". My apologies, probably an exaggeration  Tongue but the gravel is VERY old (I've had it longer than the tank, and I've had the tank for about three years. The gravel is full of algae, and it would be very difficult to clean. Right now it is brown, white, and blue.

Also, I don't really mind having the tank cycle for a month or so!  Smiley The goldies would be in a bucket with their heater and some hiding spots and stuff.

But thanks for your opinion - I'm not trying to contradict or anything, I just think this would be both a fun project for X-mas break and also nice for the fishies to get some new decorations and things.  Cheesy

I checked out the other post, so I'll add my opinions here instead Smiley

I largely agree with Andrea actually... why would you deliberately kill the eco system in your tank? You could at least leave the filter alone. Even if it's all "grimy" looking, you can just clean it off with a sponge and switch a part of the filter media.

If you'd change the gravel, I don't mind, but black tends to have a rather unpleasant impact on the goldfishes' colors Smiley If you'd have something a little bit lighter, something brown-mixed something. It somehow reflects the colors of the fish nicer Smiley
I'd also toss in a piece of bog wood and grow some algae on it, the goldfish love nibbling on that and the algae + it gives a natural and beautiful look to the tank! Cheesy
Plants, pick some nice Dwarf anubias to grow a small carpet by the front of the tank, and buy some bigger plants like Java Fern or Elodea Smiley

The worst thing though, keeping them in a bucket for a few weeks. Does it feel like a good idea to you? At least buy a bigger plastic container or something to keep your fish in. You could have the old gravel there with them as well, a bit of it maybe Wink A bucket would be so small, and the heater might over-heat the water and kill your fish Undecided

Hi OrandaLover,

you may like to read how I did it with the new tank. our goldies were out of the tank for about 5 hours in that container ( in old tankwater, their plants and an airstone bubbling )
(Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

You may like to mix more gravel with the old one. But please don't clean the filter on the same day. Do it about one to two weeks later, and of course keep adding Stability.

Initially I had black gravel with my Goldies, their orange colour was really great against the black, But Sunshine having more the wild colour could hardly be seen... so setting up the new tank I mixed the dark with natural, light gravel. The whole tank looks nice and brighter too.

As you've got a Black Moor, you may like to consider it, you may not see him / her too good.

But of course it is personal preference  Wink

Aww, and yes, I meant to say too, please be careful with chosing decorations. Avoid the ones with too small holes and sharp edges. My Humphrey once got stuck in a rockhole and while wiggling himself out he lost quite a few scales. I was afraid of loosing him, but he recovered

Alright guys, now thinking about it, I guess you're right 'bout the filter. Also - for cleaning the filter, I mainly just meant getting all the algae off of the tubing. It don't have no cartridges or anything like that  Smiley

Would it be a good idea to clear out MOST of the gravel and then add new gravel on top of it? I was mostly thinking black to make Zodiac and Jingle "pop", but Hanna's got a good point about Batal's black!  Smiley
What color's do you think would make Pebbles "pop"? (she's silver with gold dots on either side)

Nossie: About the bucket - it's not very small. I have two five gallon buckets that I can easily set up with some terracotta pots and fake plants for the weeks of cycling. True, much too small for a permanent home, but I think it would do well as a temporary housing. What do you think?  Wink

What kind of decorations would be fun for the goldies and still safe for them? I'm considering adding an airstone/bubble wand as well. Also, there is a pleco currently living with the goldies, so what plants and decor would be good for him?

WWWAAAIIITTT!!!! I just had an idea. Which you guys have been suggesting all along (either in this thread or the other one) and I've been SO deaf to  Wink

WHAT IF - I take the goldies out of the main tank and into the 5 gallon bucket (temporary, mind you), take out some of the more dirty gravel, add new gravel, add live plants, add decor, and clean off the sides of the tank. (o my gosh, that took MUCH less time to explain and stuff. ERGH!) then, I'll add the goldfish back in after a few hours???
This would definitely count as my weekly water change!  Cheesy

That would be perfect, but cleaning the sides of the tank should be a weekly maintanence chore any way on the tank. Smiley
I also wipe off my filters every time I do a water change if their dirty and slimy on the outside. Wink

Much, much better Smiley

I don't think you need to think that much about what color to choose on the gravel... I have something pretty natural (=brown, white, black), and I'd say all my fish look really nice thanks to the lighting I have Smiley It makes the whites and reds glow Smiley

He's there now Grin

I named him Bruce (Willis) c: Pink body, and red + turquoise fins Smiley
He's busy checking the plants out while I mix some salt for him. Found a few little holes in his fins, and I had noticed some of the other fish in the tank nibbling on him a bit >> He seems to be getting more comfortable by the minute! Smiley
