For how long can you leave them alone?
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:23:10 AM »

Hello goldfishelovers. This is my first post here. Just a week ago two small goldfishes settled in our apartment. It seems that they feel good in their new house, but now I have some newbi question.

For how long can they be left alone without feeding? Well, say we are going out for a weekend. Shall we ask someone to feed them or they can wait? But if we planning a two week vocation - what to do in that case? Are there any mangers (don't know proper name - autofeeding device) on the market?

Thank you

There are auto-feeding devices on the market.  Most petshops/aquaric shops will carry them.
Goldfish can go without feeding for as much as two weeks.  They will eat algae growing in the tank as well as nibble on any plants you have in the tank.  The feeder blocks are not good to put in the tank (weekend feeders).
They just end up fouling up the water.  It's better to let them go hungry rather than pollute the water.

Thank you Mindemae, but would you mind to clear something up for me. My tank is new, actually a week ago we brought fishes from Petco, thus there is no algae in the tank so far. Though I put four medium size plants in there. So. Can I leave the guys for a week or so with no meals? And shall I give them more flakes than usually as goodby feeding?

You can easily leave the fish there, there WILL be something for the fish to eat in the tank no matter what. And I'm afraid that if you bought plants with thin and small leaves, there won't be much left of them soon Wink My fantails totally tore my smaller plant apart... xD (And they were like 1.5 inch long at the time)

Don't give them any more than usual for a "goodbye" this will just pollute the water unnecessarily as goldfish don't have stomachs, and the food goes straight through them! They just collect the necessary nutrition, and that's it. So feed them 3-4 times a day, and in small amounts. But like mentioned earlier, they'll be fine for two weeks! (:
If it'd make you feel better, you could try and give them some freeze-dried live foods Wink (Blood worms, tubifex, krill...) Just before you leave, it's more nutritious than normal flake foods (:

If you do go with a fish-sitter, be sure to be clear on feeding times and amounts.  Putting the food for each day in little individual bags is a good idea, as is giving your sitter a measuring spoon or some device.

If you decide to have somebody to feed your fish, it is a good tip to pre-pack a pinch of food for each day, like Nicole mentioned, so they will not be overfed. But they will be fine for a few days and as Nossie said, up to 2 weeks.

I put our two babies on a diet, as I thought they may need a bit more food as they grow bigger I noticed that the water got slightly cloudy, which is a sign of overfeeding. So I had to kick myself. Now they will get only one pinch a day after 2 days diet.
