Mouth rot
« on: September 20, 2014, 11:45:42 AM »

We have a 3 gal tank with a 4 inch goldfish.  It's mouth started to go red so I put it through a series of tetracycline.  It quit "flashing" around it's tank but then it's fins started getting dark marks along with losing some scales along it's sides.  I would go through a treatment again, but the fish seems to have lost it's lips.  My daughter wants to do all we can, but the fish doesn't seem to be able to eat.  It swims around just fine, but it looks bad.  What can I do?  Any help would be appreciated.

Your fish lost its lips? This is

A. Not a good sign
B. There aren't any treatments to regrow lips from mouth rot
C. Check water quality, pH, nitrates and change water

Use melafix and aquarium salt you can buy at petco to extend the life of your fish, however with the symptoms you described, will not live very long as mouth rot must be spotted in early stages before the lips are lost.
