Question about albino comet goldfish
« on: August 05, 2010, 10:19:30 PM »

Hey
I have a male albino comet, I know he truly albino because he is white but has a light pink sheen to him (very pretty) however he has one blue/silver eye and one red eye.
The red eye is not a sickness, his eye colour is actually red, black pupil red around it. Just wondering if this is common/normal and if it means that he may be blind (like a white cat)
    Thanks

It's common, it means that the fish is white. I have a fantail, just like it, with red around both her pupils, so that's nothing to worry about Smiley If there's a pink sheen, the fish probably has matte scales, where the pigment cells that create the metallic reflections are missing.

Here are some examples of "real" albino fish Smiley

As you can see on the telescope (upper) his pupils are red, and on the oranda (lower) the pupils even have a pink color. So an albino fish is a fish that's lacking pigment. Think about a white bunny! Cheesy

Tell me, though, how does the blue/silver eye look? More details Wink

Thanks for the reply Cheesy

The blue eye looks normal. Black centre, light blue around it, with a few black specks in the blue.

Our Skippy is white, only a few red freckles, his eyes are "normal", so he must have more pigment cells

Just Keep Swimming: In that case, he might be a matte fish, simply. With a tad of black in him.
It's normal for calico fish, for example to have different colored eyes, both of mine have pretty funny black spots on their eyes, and on one of them the whole eye is black!

Anyway, is there a way for you to post a pic of your fish? Smiley

if you pst then post with clicking on the "reply" button.  Scrolling down a bit you will see another button with "browse" There you can browse for pics in your pc. Click on the chosen pic and its path will appear in that box.
When you submit your post the pics will show up.

hope this helps Wink

Even if he would turn blind by accident or something, he would be just fine Smiley Fish can easily stay active and happy even if they lose their sight!

HI
Thanks for helping me post these Cheesy

His eye looks really odd in the first picture, but the only way I could get them both was to take it from a wierd angle, both his eyes are actually the same size Grin
The second pic is just his red eye.

Hey
About the pics, on his top fin you can just barely see three little dots near the top like pearls inside his fin, just wondering if that is normal, I don't think it is the ich because he seems perfectly healthy and I have been watching it (for a long time) and he has always had it and it never changes.

Also on his tail he has a line (kinda) through the bottom half of it, I  got him from another owner, but I don't think he ever had fin rot, though it looks like the line is from another layer that grew on his tail. Is this normal when their growing (I recently put him in a much larger tank) and would it hurt to put pimafix in his water, even though I don't think he is sick, I am just afraid his fins may be weak.
I don't know a lot about comets Embarrassed
  Thanks Grin

P.S
 Do comets get lonely Huh

First of all, it's a metallic comet, so it's not even close to an albino fish Wink Second of all, his eyes look normal, but quite interesting nonetheless Smiley If a fish turns blind it's rather the black pupil that changes color and not the iris. (The eyes usually get cloudy first as a warning, and if that's not treated, the fish may lose his sight)

Second of all, don't worry about those dots, my white fantail has them too, I guess they have something to do with the color or something Smiley And you shouldn't worry about the line, I understood as it's not even a rip in the fin, so that's nothing to worry about! Fish get scarred too from time to time Wink (And I can't really see the tail on the pic)

Comets, and goldfish in general do enjoy company, especially from their own kin, but if you don't have the space, you shouldn't get any more fish just to keep him company. For that you'd have to get a 20 or even 30 gallon tank first! (I'd go for 30 and keep only two, since they're comets). Other than that, try talking to him and cuddling with him! That'll be enough company for now Wink

It's nonetheless a really beautiful fish, and I admire his fins Smiley

HE is a beautiful fish, and for sure a boy  Grin see his breeding tubercules on the gills, and the "pearls" on the first ray of his fin is just normal.  Wink
