HELP ASAP!!
« on: June 24, 2010, 11:51:29 PM »

My daughters fancy tail goldfish is staying on the bottom of the tank and has clamped fins and has a clear, white thing growing around the tips of the tails. It has no appitite. I didn't see anything that resembles what this might be on the disease list. Please help ASAP.

Is there any way you can post a picture of the fish?
What size is your tank?  Are there any other goldfish in the tank with this one?
Have you tested your water chemistry for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph?
If your fish is alone in the tank then go ahead and treat the whole tank.
If he is in a tank full of other fish then remove him asap and to a hospital tank.
Treat him with 1 TBS of aquarium salt per every 5 gallons of water and Melafix and Pimafix according to bottles directions.
Please keep us updated. Smiley

How does this white thing look like/
Is it fuzzy looking? What's its shape? regular or iregular?

Very Important: as soon as sth is not normal you should test your water parametres and treat as Mindemae mentioned.

If Melafix, Pimafix and Salt doesn't work, there is Multicure available, its disadvantage is that it kills beneficial bacteria because it contains Malachite Green, Methylene Blue and Acriflavine.

Also perform 15-20% waterchanges at this stage maybe every 2nd day.

Please keep us updated and maybe you can give us some more info?

Just adding, that you should test the water asap, and treat with the aforementioned medications. Because even if the "shotgun method" would work, the Multicure that Hanna mentioned, the reason that your fish is sick is probably something as simple as too small tank, insufficient filtration, or some minor water quality problems. Which most people don't realize and rather throw in some über medication as soon as the fish looks unhappy.

Good luck anyway, and keep us updated! Cheesy

Correct, I'd only use the "shotgun" (lol) if the other stuff doesn't work. And then strictly how it is advised on the bottle.

So try first Melafix, Pimafix, Salt tonis and waterchanges.
Also please make sure there is enough aeration and good filtration

It is the only goldfish in a 10 gallon tank and has a really good filter on it. I will try to get a picture of it up a little later. It is almost like a mucusy looking thing. It is kind of whispy looking. It's hard to explain.

I will try what everyone suggested. Thanks so much. This goldfish is more than just a pet to my daughter. It is therapy for her. She was in a serious car accident 3 years ago and it has helped her emotionally to have it.

That they are. Smiley
If you don't see any improvement in two weeks, or the fungus (which it sounds like to me) gets to the base of the tail or fins, you might want to seek out a vet ASAP.  Usually these things go away on their own, but sometimes it needs professional treatment.  Also watch out for red streaks on the body or fins- sometimes bacteria like to take advantage of other health problems and start an infection as well.

"Mucusy looking"? Actually, it might be as simple as that. It's excess mucus that the fish is producing because of skin irritation.
So the next step for you, is to really get this water test kit, and check the pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. A fish can get this extra mucus when the skin is being burned in acidic water (=low pH), or because of these other three agents that are really toxic to fish in high concentrations.
When you've tested the water and noticed that all these levels are good (you could post them here and we could tell you!) you should start treating for parasites right away, salt works for most of the "basic" parasites in a tank, but you need to keep the salt level constant in the tank, so you should dose any new water during the water changes too. Make sure that you have a medical aquarium salt, and follow the instructions of dosage on the bottle. Next, it could be good to add some Melafix, just to help the fish recover better. It might be a good idea to feed the fish with some medicated foods, there is some manufactured especially against parasites, to be sure you kill the ones that are already infesting the fish.

Next time you post, I want to see some test results of the water Cheesy

Ok so it cleared but now it is back. Test on water are all where they are supposed to be. Fish isn't eating again and this stuff on his tail has eaten some of it away. It is no where near as long as it was and hoping it doesn't totally disappear this time. Got the Melafix going but why did it come back?

when did you test last?

when did you start to treat with melafix? and for how long?

did you use pimafix in combination with melafix?

Nitrate is safe at 20. Nitrite is safe at 0. Hardness is a little on the hard side at 150. Total alkalinity is ideal at 180. Ph is netural at 7.2.

I tested last yesterday.

It reappeared 3 days ago and that is when I started the Melafix again.

I haven't used the pimafix with it. I am going to petsmart today to get it and more meleafix.

Your test results are fine.

Can you please post some pictures? This would help a lot.

That it came back means that it wasn't treated long  enough and didn't clear up. Sometimes we cannot see anything anymore but it still is there. This is why it is recommeded to treat a few days after it disappeared.

Did you get medicated food?

I keep fingers crossed for your little guy

Don't bother buying pimafix anymore, get yourself some anti-bacterial medication instead! This will help your fish recover better since it will actually KILL the bad bacteria. But do be careful with the filter bacteria as well, test your water regularly during treatment, and change water as soon as necessary!

I think that something toxic is getting in your tank water. Aerosol sprays deodorant, fly spray, takes very little to quickly kill, so sounds like a tiny amount is getting in.  Is the tank water fully covered from falling aerosols.  Or are you adding any chemicals, from the info it sounds like a chemical burning the tip of the tail. In a higher concentration the fish mucous would start to come away.

I think it might be some sort of harmful bacteria clinging to his tail. Ask your pet shop.
P.s Plz post a picture so we have an idea of what it looks like!
