Injury
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:36:06 AM »

Right well this morning I did a 50% water change in the 180L, the 60L and the 28L tanks, I added water conditioner in all three tanks I put Nutrafin aqua plus in the 60L tank and Interpet Bioactive Tapsafe in the 180L and the 28L. Anyway went back up stairs a few moments ago to check on them and everyone else seems fine except Flash. I noticed that a scale was missing on his left side, I gave them a bit more food as I only gave them half a sachet of brine shrimp, it is TetraFreshDelica brine shrimp in jelly. I checked his other side before I put the food in  and it was fine but then before I put the food in he just went mad which seemed a little odd but he is a rather weird fish, when I checked his right side again there was several scales missing and some of the marks looked quite deep. I have added some API Melafix to the water but why do you think he did this. He had already been fed this morning after the water change. His filter is fine as I checked it, I'm not sure what the perameters are but with only just doing a 50% water change they should be fine. I just don't understand why this has happened. I had put the heater on because I had to change so much of the water and I was worried it would be too cold so I put it on for about 2 hours. Could this have been what upset him? I just don't understand why it hasn't upset Merle. Any ideas would be welcome. Also can I add aquarium salt whilst using Melafix or not? Do you think I should keep using the melafix or remove it tomorrow and just add salt?

Oh poor thing Sad
It happens to my fish now and then that they get overly excited about digging for the sinking pellets and may scratch themselves a little on the wood pieces in the tank, not this deep though. I think melafix and close watching of the water quality will help him recover Smiley He's not clamping his fins much though, right?
If you'd like to keep this from happening again, check your ornaments and make sure they have no sharp edges, you could sand them down or something if they're on wood.

He did it on the shipwreck in the tank and I checked it before I got it to make sure there were no sharpe edges, even my partner checked to make sure I think he just rubbed up against it very hard. He has such power behind him, I think he could easily hurt himself on anything with the power he has.
No he isn't clamping or at least he wasnt earlier when I went up and checked on him. Should I use the Melafix for 7 days like it says on the bottle?

Sure, do that Smiley I don't think he'd need melafix, but I don't see any harm in having it there either. It'll probably be healed in just a few days.

You really notice scale loss on a moor....don't worry mine often goes through the wars...I suspect my other fish lose as many scales, but I just don't notice Grin

I was thinking the same thing as Scrivens, because of Flash's colouring maybe it looks worse than what it is?

Lucky lost a few scales a while back, I removed the culprit once I figured out what had caused the injury, but it looked a sort of pale colour where the scales no long were. But because of her colouring it wasn't really noticeable Smiley

Yeah probably. I know what he did it on, he did it on the side of the shipwreck because he just suddenly freaked out and it is close to the side of the tank, it has pretty smooth edges which is why I bought it. I will have another check of it and see if there is something I can do if not I will just have to take it out. He does seem to hurt himself on everything. He had a spat of hurting himself on everything when he was in the 60L and the was before he got to big for the tank. That's why Im worried about putting bogwood in.

I should stick the bogwood in. ...losing the odd scale is perfectly normal, and bogwood is very beneficial

I've not seen lucky get damaged by the driftwood at all  Smiley one piece arks slightly and I was worried she would catch herself but she never swims through it, just nibbles on everything around it  Grin

I have mopani wood, it's more gnarly and rounded-looking, probably safer for goldfish that way Smiley

Yeah I keep buying decorations looking at them and thinking Flash wont hurt himself on that and he always manages to. I think he does it on purpose to prove me wrong. lol. I wonder if there is something wrong with him. Can fish have problems with eye sight or be that bit more st*pid than other fish. Merle never hurts himself on anything, Flash hurts himself on everything. I just don't get it.

They do have their sideline organs that are supposed to keep them from bumping into things... Huh
Heh, Raven is the same though, every now and then she has a torn fin and I just can't understand what she's done! she gets startled by the bristlenoses sometimes though so maybe that's it?

There is only flash and Merle in the tank. He sticks close to Merle all the time and Merle sticks to him. I don't know what to do short of taking all the ornaments out of the tank (there are only two) he will go for ma month or two with nothing then he will have a month where he just keeps hurting himself. He confuses me something chronic. The fry are easier to look after than him.

As long as his lateral line looks fine, maybe his just a bit clumsy?
Or maybe he mis-judges distances and hits things without intending to?

I know Lucky once was on the far right hand side of the tank, something spooked her and instead of swimming left to open water, she swam further right and hit the glass  Undecided

There isn't anything wrong with just pebbles of different sizes and plants in a tank either... Smiley
