help needed for blind goldfish

Hello, need some help please.

I inherited an otherwise healthy fish from someone. The fish has popeye (I think). The skin around the eye area is flat, but the eyeball itself bulges out a little too much. Its eyes have a greenish growth on them... I think it is algae. This fish was kept in deplorable condition with green algae covering everything in the tank so heavily that you couldn't see into it.

The fish is now blind so I have him in a solitary tank so it does not have to compete for food. I have introduced greens into his diet to see if better nutrition will help, but it has been months and there is no change. Can someone suggest a medication I might try?

Also, the fish had this condition when it came to me, and the owner did not seem aware of it's condition so I don't know how long the fish has been like this. I do know the fish is 6 years old though.

You can add one tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons but there isn't a medication that will completly cure the disease availible.

I don't think fantailor means a tablespoon, and I don't see how salt would help.  Adding salt can often lead to kidney failure in an already poorly goldfish.

There is no doubt that this condition was caused by the poor quality of the water in which he was previously kept.  A vitamin supplement might help; but to be honest other than maintaining scrupulous water quality, there is not much that you can do.

I have heard and seen a situation in another forum, where a fish had a cloudy eye which cleared by itself after being kept in better conditions... If the condition isn't getting any worse, I'm not sure what you can do  Undecided

As long as the fish is eating and seems otherwise fine?  Smiley
