RIP Finn :-(
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:23:14 PM »

Well...I left friday afternoon for a wedding and got back on Sunday night to find one of my fish dead and the other one barely holding on.  My favorite fishy, Finn, my little Oranda died.  Before I left on Fri afternoon I vacuumed the gravel, did 25% water change and added RidIch and salt and fed them, they seemed absolutely fine.  I dont understand WTF could've gone wrong in the 2 1/2 days I was gone.  Needless to say I'm upset about it which is why I havent wanted to come on here...but I really need help to figure this out.  I really loved that little fish.  So...I have continued Ich treatment and the other fish turned around and looks fine now...WTF do I need to do to get rid of this? I'm at my wits end.  I've been vacuuming gravel, 25% water change, adding ridich and the salt I took out.  am I doing something wrong?

I'm sorry to hear about poor little Finn.   Cry

Goldfish come down with ich for several reasons. Stress, overcrowding, or a parameter spike can be potential illness-triggers, and sometimes it's hard to isolate the cause.

Ich can take a little while to go away, so don't freak out when it's been less than 10 days. Just keep doing what you're doing....50% water changes weekly as well as testing the water to keep it perfect, as well as adding that .3% concentration of salt. I didn't quite catch if your remaining fish has ich or not, but if he doesn't I would just continue with the treatment for the whole 7 days to be on the safe side and kill the protozoan.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Nossie!  Wink

Yes Ireiden, you want to kill those harmful little pests of completely, and continueing treatment will do that.  Smiley Even though you may not see the manifestation of the protozoan cysts on your fish's body, they can still be in the water and just waiting to attack when you take out the salt before completing treatment! That is why it is important to knock it out right away instead of watching it go, come back, go come back....it is more harmful to the fish for THAT to happen rather than keeping salt in there for a little while.

I spoke to the person at Petsmart when I went to get a few things and he mentioned having the temp a little higher will help.  Unfortunately I dont have a heater yet but will be getting one in the next few weeks.  If I DONT raise the temp of the water via a heater, will the treatment still work?

Also, I'm using a combination of RidIch and adding salt back after I do the 25% water changes each day, using both salt and the medication is fine, right?  She looks totally healthy right now and I have a log now that I am keeping of what I do each day so I can keep track.  Just crossing my fingers that I can get rid of this thing.

The treatment will work. Raising the heat will "only" speed up the life cycle of the protozoans and make the treatment a bit more effective Smiley

I have never used Rid ich, so I wouldn't know, but if it doesn't say anything on the package about not combining it with anything, I think it's ok! Salt shouldn't interfere in any negative way Smiley

Yep, just as Nossie said. Raising the temp isn't essential, it will just make the process faster.

Glad to hear your fish is doing alright and that you are keeping track of your daily agenda with a chart.  Wink I know that helps me when I have a lot to do.
