help!?
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:51:39 PM »

i have a 6 or more inch goldfish in a 55 gal tank. 0 ammonia, 0 nitritre 13 nitrate
i think he has flukes. he has white dots all over his fins. his veins are visible in his fins. it sounds bad but he is showing no signs of distress whatsoever. i also have 5 other goldfish 4 2in ones and 1 5in one. the 5 in one also has it, but bc he is a black moor i can not see any red veins or blood pathes on him like the 6in ryukin has. i was wondering if i should treat this, and if yes, how?

Aquarium salt 1 TBS per every 5 gallons and raise your water temp a bit to around 72, then get some melafix and use accoring to bottles directions.  You can melafix anywhere, walmart, oetsmart etc., and any other store that sells fish supplies.
Sounds like ich to me.

SeaWitch
i have two 400 maribeland biowheel filters.

Mindemae
i am positive it is not ick. i have had ick before and this is more severe and hard to cure. i just ordered aqua prazi from goldfish connection. this is supposed to harmlessly treat flukes. thanks anyway though

Flukes are some kind of parasites that can be found allover the fish's body and on the gills. These parasites aren't sucking blood from it or 'eating' the fish. But they live in the mucus layer and get nutrition from there. This causes the fish to clamp its fins and produce excess slime allover. They may also try to rub themselves on the interior of the aquarium, which will result in ulcers if allowed to go on for long.
These parasites are also quite difficult to treat, since they could even be hiding in your filter, which would need sterilization. To treat this you should use potassium permanganate, Fluke Tabs, formalin, copper, chloramine T or Health Guard. But many of these treatments might hurt your fish, so be sure that it IS fluke before you treat! It could be Ich, like Mindemae said.
