You'll need to get a new tank if you can afford it, a 5 gallon tank is way to small for 3 goldfish. I have one goldfish in a 6 gallon tank and that's too small for just him. I think it is 10 gallons per goldfish. For now yes they are definitely running out of oxygen, your best bet would be to get an air stone until you can get a new tank. Have you got a filter running? Because they will add oxygen to the water too.

First of all, you get a 40 gallon tank. That would probably already help your fish a lot! Goldfish need lots of oxygen, and three fish in such a small space use too much of it.
Second of all, an air stone is always a good precaution, so get yourself one and make sure that you have good filtration in the water!
If you have a filter too small, don't bother getting yourself a new one right away, but keep an eye on the water chemistry and doing regular water changes should help the bio load on the filter. Concentrate your funds on the bigger tank for now.

Airstones are also good for hot weather, because warmer water doesn't hold oxygen as well.  You can also get a little pump and a cute toy that moves with air bubbles.  Both that and the airstone look nice in the tank, and our fish enjoy riding the bubbles! Smiley

you are going to need a 30 gallon tank. it is 10 gallons per fish, and yes yes yes your fish are suffocating! Put an airstone in asap, and that should help with the aeration. also, for a tank that small, water changes need to be frequent!!! the nitrates and ammonia will build up and kill your fish. Do a 5-10% water cahnge twice, ifnot three tiems a week to balance this out :S

I agree with everything mentioned on here.
My tank now is too small for our 2 goldfish and I must do frequent waterchanges to keep up, untill we'll get a big tank.
So the main things to monitor are: water chemistry, good filtration, good aeration, not overfeeding

Humpsi and Hepsi are now about 3 to not quite 4 inches each plus tail, so I really need to keep up to maintain waterquality  Wink

I think Sonorus is getting to be around three inches plus her lovely tail.. Tiger's still only like, two inches plus tail, but he's rounding out nicely Smiley

Izzy is getting big, too, but not as big as Spot!  He's about 5 in. or more!  Tiger and Son will grow huge in no time!
Yesterday, we re-landscaped their tank and put them in a little transport tank while we worked.  When it was time to put them back, we went to pick them up with our hands, and Spot was so strong I couldn't hold him.  I can only imagine what he'll look like in a year.

I rougly measured them: Tigers about 2.5 in. and Sonorus is a whopping 4 inches! lol plus tail of course XD

I am so afraid to touch my fish because they arent used to handling, so I watch them lol.

gave them an algae wafer XD oh man Tiger and his fat head kep pushing it in to the little glass stones and Sonorus had to dig it out again lol

Aww, those Orandas :'D

Anyway, I always catch my fish with my hands, partly because I feel closer to them then, and partly because I'm sure that I will release them carefully back into the water (: I don't like having to turn the net inside-out... It might just hurt them.
And I also read somewhere that it's best to catch goldfish with wet hands rather than a net, since the net would mess with their slime coat c:
