my snails shell is half covered in algae,,is there anyway of cleaning him without causing any harm.

Do you need to clean him? I don't think he minds the algae as they're not harmful in the slightest. Besides, trying to brush/wipe them off might hurt him more than leaving them there.

You could take a soft toothbrush and brush the algae away with it.
It probably doesn't look very good but I don't think it is harmful to your snail.
