Undecided what to do....
« on: February 12, 2010, 12:35:11 AM »

I purchased two baby oranda fish and would like to put them with my oranda female that is all alone.  The new guys are only 1 inch.  My older Oranda is the size of my hand!  She's huge!  I don't think she sees real well and I am afraid to put the new guys in with her because I'm afraid she will think they are lunch.
How big should they be before they can all live together peacefully or would they be fine together now?
I've seen my oranda eat a whole pea, skin and all which i accidentally dropped in there before i could shed the skin.
I've also seen her eat a big piece of orange in one gulp!
I'm so undecided what to do.  I should have waited maybe but the only shop that sells bigger orandas is 1 1/2 hours away from me and sometimes they don't even have any.  It's very hard for me to find fancy goldfish where I live.
Thanx guys! Smiley

Normally, you want the new goldfish to be at least 3/4 the size of the fish that are already in the existing tank. Maybe you can try raising the two smaller oranda in a separate tank until they get a little bigger.

Goldfish normally will only eat things that comfortably fit in their mouth , such as fish eggs and fry. It also depends on each individual goldfish and its temperament. Some are more docile than others.

If you want to try putting the two smaller goldfish in with your bigger one, first change the decor in the tank  around a bit so that your older oranda will think she's in a new tank. This will give them a more even playing field, since they all will be trying to get accustomed to the new tank layout instead of your bigger goldfish zeroing in on the two newbies. Also make sure to leave one side of the  tank with lots of open space for the bigger oranda to swim so she doesn't harass the smaller ones. If you can add some more plants on one side of the tank to give the two smaller fish some additional places to hide, that will help also. When you are feeding them, make sure the smaller ones get enough to eat in accordance to their size.

Thank you so much for your great suggestions and thoughtful reply!
I think for now I will take your suggestion about keeping the smaller fish in their own tank.  I was hoping to be able to tear down one tank since I have 3 up and running!
Oh well, I want the best for these guys so I'll wait until they grow some more! Cheesy
