Help with Gold fish and an outdoor pond
« on: October 06, 2009, 10:34:07 AM »

Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some guidance.

A friend contacted me and asked if I could put his gold fish in my outdoor pond.

I'm awaiting further information from him about the fish, other than they are 'just goldfish'.

He said they were large, but my concern is they won't be able to live in my pond.

It's a natural spring fed pond with other fish:  Bass, Blue gill, Sunnies, Catfish along with probably turtles and snakes when the weather is warmer.

Will this be a problem for the "fish" in general??

Any input, help or information would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.....

hi,

Your pond sounds like a very nice place for fish in general, but you also listed a lot of potential predators that could eat the goldfish. Unless they are regular common or comet goldfish that are 10-12 inches long, my feeling is that they will be preyed up by their predators very quickly. If any of the goldfish is the fancy type, it will have next to zero chance of survival.

Maybe he can post an ad for his area on craigslist's website (it's a free website much like ebay where you can post ads). If he lists the fish as free, i'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to adopt them and give them a good home. If he tries to sell them , then it could take a little longer.

I hope this helps a bit in your decision.

Check with your local game warden, it is illegal to release non-native fish into lakes and ponds

Hi there,
I had a goldfish which lived in our pond for 5 years!! after the first year the pond's pump broke. I just left it as is. only feeding our fish probably once a month a tiny piece of flake food. Never ever cleaning the pond. He loved eating the build up of algae on the pond. what we think is dirty is a great home for fish. during this period of time my gold fish had almost tripled in size.

I agree with Helein.  There are way too many predators.  Wild carp lean how to avoid predators, but tame GF have no chance.
