A Question from PFK
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:42:15 AM »

This was a question of the month in PFK latest issue

The reply probably means I'm going to stop taking this magazine

Here is a summary of the Question

Sick lethargic Ryukin in 120 L tank witha shubunkin, a moor and a lionhead, plus 5 White clouds

The reply (expert opinion) was :-it's   probably

a) ectoplasmic parasite
b) bacterial infection

NOT A MENTION OF THE FACT THAT HE'D BE OVERSTOCKED WITH A TANK TWICE THAT SIZE!!!!!!!

So, it looks like I'm going to be complaining to them yet again

What hope is there if a leading magazine gives such advice?

Every thing is going downhill.

I liked the answered but I don't at the same time. I bet they got the disease right but not the tank size. It makes my sad and annoyed.

Ehm... well it could be a parasite/bacterial infection but it's always more important to deal with the cause, not the disease. You know, if fish are lethargic, do a water change! Or upgrade the tank or whatever that caused the disease/symptoms in the first place and then treat them with medication if that's even needed anymore.

Yes, PFK have made similar mistakes, there was one that said it was okay to keep koi in tanks or something like that.
I believe the editor is going to try and get members of the PFK forum to answer questions, not sure if that's definitely going to happen, but I did see it being mentioned.

To be honest, the goldfish answers of the magazine are always a bit off, I forget which month it was, but someone asked about cleaning a 40litre tank, that had goldfish. The reply was basically weekly water changes of 25 - 35% and then added at the end, mentioned about the goldfish outgrowing the tank, and said 'buy a bigger tank', but doesn't specify a size.
Lets face it, a lot of things are bigger than 40 litres, so that fish could still end up in un-suitable aquaria.

Haven't brought this months PFK though, so hadn't seen this latest disaster...

My hypothesis is this: Even if your stocking levels are good...what happens if something goes wrong? such as a sudden spike or stress due to illness....then I think fish get ill because there is little spare capacity

My own tank is running at  about 97% , which means there is no spare capacity in the event of emergency, which is why I'm looking at a much bigger tank (Bank manager willing)

Hummmm....who's that?? Wink

You deserve a bigger tank for all support you give here. You have space for a bigger tank?

Btw - have you ever thought of starting a blog and putting your message out there?  Scrivens says  "Tank size is important". Maybe a t-shirt??? Wink

Surely the 50 gallon/200 litre tank is enough for 3 fancy goldfish?
How many apple snails do you have? As I think stocking wise they need 10 litres each.

yes it's enough Shwiskee...and that's ok when things are fine...but there's no margin of error when one is fully-stocked...I want to be in the situation where my tank has enough spare capacity to cope with unexpected water-parameter changes or illness, or emergency re-housing.

Say I had to replace a filter unexpectedly and the tank started to cycle; that can be coped with much better with an under-stocked tank

My tank with Lucky is around 76% stocked according to AQ Advisor, you really wouldn't think it, when she's so tiny XD

I'm still thinking that Lucky is permanently stunted given his size and age: The flip-side is that you get to have him in his present tank for a good while yet Grin

Yeah, there is something not right with her growth, I think with her it's a mixture of genetics, being a feeder fish and goodness knows how she was kept at the fair and then me being a complete nonce to begin with didn't help things either.

I am still planning on upgrading her when she reaches 6 inches (with the 6x fish length rule, that's the maximum size for a goldfish my tank can take), but it's impossible to know how long that will take her XD
I don't like keeping her on her own much either, would she benefit from fishy company such as minnows?
I know I can't take another goldfish, but something smaller would probably be okay?
