How big can they grow?

Goldfish grow biggest in ponds, nothing can beat mother nature, as I've heard (:
But now I am wondering about how big they can grow living in an aquarium with sufficient space for growth and with the best diet, water and general living conditions? And how old can they get?

My mother has had a few common fantails through the years in her 100 liter (~26.4 gallon) tank (one at a time with some tropical fish) and so far they've gotten to grow about 5 inches without counting the tail. And lived for maybe 3-5 years each.

Well the oldest goldfish known lived for over 40 years in an aquarium of sort.  So given a proper diet and environment , they can have a very long lifespan.

Most goldfish will only grow to about 5-8 inches (excluding the tail) , so this probably what you should expect of your goldfish.

Yeah, the oldest registered by Guinness was 43 years, but I heard that the actually oldest one was 45 (: (only not accepted by Guinness records because of a lack of proof.)

My biggest black Moor was too large to flush.  I buried him under a potted plant and watched it flourish the next couple of years or so.  Also, he lived around 5 - 6 years or so.  I have got to get myself another tank and more fishies!!  Wink

hi
my dad has a koi that are over 3 feet and over 10 pounds and they are only 6 years old. and u can hand feed a few of them peas it is sweet.

Wow!  BIG fishie!!
Ours are five inches and growing.  They used to be able to fit in their hollow log toy together, all three of them.  Not anymore! Wink  I'm dreading the day they grow so big they get stuck in it!

Some of my goldfish are about 9 inches....and my Orandas, 2 of them, are as big as my hand.  The orandas are just big, and round and fat.   Smiley

Hanna, that is one beautiful big old goldfish in that picture.   Haha, thats what I should do.....take a pix of a baby next to one of my goldfish.  That is a good idea to compare size. Wink

Nossie, Yeah I read about those 40 year old goldfish. WOW!  I'm thinking that most only live, on the average, around 10 years or so.  And probably ones with exceptional care up to around 30?  Genetics and environment also plays a role in it.

Wouldn't that be something for your children and maybe their children to know your fish?

Me too! Cheesy And of course I will! I got a beautiful, big and sturdy bureau from my grandpa's childhood home that I'm gonna fix up to keep the tank on (: (saving a load of money in other words...)
I'm so excited about it myself, I've been thinking about it and planning it for weeks! Which plants to have, gravel etc etc! C:

Ohhh I LOVE that you are using something from your grandfather.  I LOVE vintage and Antiques.
I have a desk from my grandfather that I have my 10 gallon quarantine/hospital tank on.  I plan to strip it down and paint it black later on this summer when I finish all my other outdoor projects.  Roll Eyes

Yes! And this one has very nice design! (: A bit worn though, so I'll be adding another layer of varnish, among other things.
I'm sure that tank will look so lovely on this! It's a few cm bigger than the bottom of the tank, so it's gonna stand safe and sure!

Sorry Ladies, haven't been to active here the last days, just fight to NOT getting the flu... ;)it comes into winter now here in QLD.
Yes I couldn't believe my eyes when I seen this pic... and I honestly believed first they only can get about 12-14 years old which is a LONG fish life. But 40 years, WOW... it is so amazing.... Now I'll go and treat my sore throat with a glass of red wine, LOL  Cheesy

Anyway, the tank will be placed in my parents' house until fall (: We'll be living at their house until my fiances school starts (University! Cheesy) and then we'll move to a bigger apartment in a bigger city, and I'll simply be keeping my fish in the living room on the upper floor Wink

Yeah, when I got that pic I felt my eyes popping out, I couldn't believe it that goldfish can get that big. Well, learned sth again. I always thought they get not much bigger as those bigger ones one can buy at the pet shop.
Perhaps this boy likes to be pattet too.

Ours love to nibble on my finger tips, very ticklish, lol  Cheesy

Did you know that at some spas they use live fish to eat the dead skin off peoples feet when having a pedicure???
OMG I think that would be too weird but I guess some places it's popular.  My salon lady told me that when I was having a pedicure.  She showed me a picture of it.  People actually sit with their feet in a tub with water with fish in it!  Poor fish! Shocked
