help me abandoned goldfish in my new pond

Help I have just built a new large pond in my garden and have another mature natural pond with frogs, newts and all sorts of natural pond life in it. I wanted this one to be completely natural too but a friend of my son has just abandoned an inch long little common type goldfish in it! I have fed it some fish food. It only comes out in the evening.

This pond is completely empty apart from him. I wanted to just let it populate naturally like the other established pond I have. Please what to I do for the poor little thing? Would it be ok to put him in the old pond with the newts and frogs and all the other natural pond life or would he be eaten or if not fed by me starve. Oh. do advise quickly. I am concerned about him. He started life in a tiny fish bowl and this is like an ocean to him and he is on his own. I don't really want exotic stuff but I can't abandon him. Please reply. Marcia x

He's probably thinks he died and went to goldfish heaven right now! Cheesy
As for starving, I've never heard of a goldfish starving in a pond as there are so many delicious things to eat in a pond.  Insects, insect larvae, algae, plants, etc.  You might want to feed him once a day tho.  It sure will make him friendly. Smiley  If you feed him the same time each day he will become use to coming and eating at that time and soon he may even take food from your finger tips. Wink  I'm sure he'llbe spoiled in no time at all!
The only thing that you need to worry about is snakes, turtles and birds.  Some will eat small goldfish and consider it an invitation when you stock your pond in spring.  Other than that if you put some plants such as lilys in the pond for shade he shoudl be fine.  Have fun with your new little friend! Maybe it is advisable to cover the pond with a net? To protect him...

Sometimes goldfish like having friends to make them feel more safe.  If your pond is up to it, maybe you can adopt another goldie to keep him company.

Yes goldies are very friendly and they like to have company and they do not get "bored" they can play and look for food together. Wink
