He's probably thinks he died and went to goldfish heaven right now!

As for starving, I've never heard of a goldfish starving in a pond as there are so many delicious things to eat in a pond. Insects, insect larvae, algae, plants, etc. You might want to feed him once a day tho. It sure will make him friendly.

If you feed him the same time each day he will become use to coming and eating at that time and soon he may even take food from your finger tips.

I'm sure he'llbe spoiled in no time at all!
The only thing that you need to worry about is snakes, turtles and birds. Some will eat small goldfish and consider it an invitation when you stock your pond in spring. Other than that if you put some plants such as lilys in the pond for shade he shoudl be fine. Have fun with your new little friend!
