male or female ryukin?

I've a pair of ryukin but one died. I want to get a new mate but do not know how to differentiate if it is the male or female that has died. Anyone can advice? Thank you.

You can't unless your an expert untill they are in breeding season.

Usually on goldfish, the males can show breeding stars on their gills or pectoral fins.
The only other way I know of is that just before the anal fin there is a vent, males will have a concave vent whereas females have a convex vent. But it is difficult to gender goldfish when they are young, it's easier when their older or during breeding season  Smiley

both my young moor and my young fantail are showing tubercles on their gills and pectoral fins at the moment...so if yours isn't it might be female
