how do you tell the gender of a goldfish

we have alot of gold fish i our tank and we have been trying to tell if they are male or female. is there away to tell the difference between them?

There is, but rather only during spawning, as the female will swell with eggs and the male will develop white spots on his gill covers and pectoral fins.

Hello everybody,
by accident it happened that I got those two photos of Humphrey and Hepsiba.
looking at their tale fins, I may suggest they are a male and a female, but which is which?

Can anybody tell?

I also noticed that they are together almost all the time, swimming around each other as if they are "dancing" Wink

Is this a spawning behavoiur, or are they too young? I wish I 'd know how young they are, lol Cheesy

I have actually never heard about their gender having anything to do with their caudal fins... so it might just be that they have different genetic background and so their fins developed differently (:

I heard otherwise. I believed that the female had a deeper V shape in her cadual fin than the male.. also somting about their anus being more dialated than the males... or something...

Ah yeah, the anal opening has a more oval shape on the male and rounder on the female C:

Yes, I read this too lately, so I need to try to get another shot of the other fish, but it isn't easy
as they wiggel around and paddle with their little fins and then I can tell who is Humphrey and who is
Hepsiba, lol Wink

It is not easy to find info about this on the net, but I keep looking Cheesy

and keep you updated

... so there is a good chance that we have got a boy and a girl, lol?

Goldfish of the same gender will display spawning behavior with each other. The easiest and most reliable way to tell the gender of a goldfish is to either watch for eggs after increasing the water temp 1-2 degrees, or watch for the white spots on the gills of the male to appear.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA yea I actually have no idea what gender my fish are... i mean, i dunno what to look for, it might just be that I have two females or two males (in which case I`d be ever so confused about Sonorus.. Tiger.. well.. he`d stay Tiger)

If I'd get to know what gender my fish are my world would be tossed upside-down :C
Creamy will always be my ice princess! D'x (Though she'd be a dude) The calico one and Honey don't seem to have genders d: But I do refer to them as "he" most of the time C:

I also found this on wikipedia:

when it`s face is round it is female or the female will have more of a V in its tail fin as a male will have less of a V

Sexing Goldfish outside of the breeding season is extremely difficult. In the breeding season males develop small white pimples (breeding tubercles) on their gill covers and along the edge of their front fins (pectoral fins). Females are generally more rounded and deeper in body shape as they fill with roe (eggs) and have a larger vent before the anal fin.

Hm... I wouldn't quite agree with these first ones, as traits like those are different in each variety! For example comets have pretty deep V on their caudal fins compared to a common or a shubunkin. And among egg-shaped varieties some have more pointy nose than others. For instance, the ryukin is known for it's deep body and pointy nose while the tosakin has a rounder face profile (:

But then again, maybe these points are for sexing commons?

(I tried looking at wikipedia for this info you just posted, but I can't seem to find it o_O Link plz? (: )

I'd say that the upper one is a boy, and the lower is a girl C: But it could be the angle that makes them look a bit different! Grin

, the difference between the shape of their vents is quite different, Grin

How nice! (: I checked a bit on my own fish yesterday, and... (on Popo and Cream too!) and I noticed that everybody but Calico are little boys :'3 But it was quite difficult to see on Popo because he was moving around a lot, and he prefers staring at me rather than turning his butt at me xD And Cream simply decided that NOW is the time to swim! D:
but I think I'll look again when they're a bit older (:

I bet it is difficult with Mr.Popo because of his darker colour too, lol

I had a funny experience the other day when I took heaps of photos, trying to get a clear and sharp shot;
I stood in front of the tank and checked the fotos on the camera screen. And then I noticed that Hump and Hep just looked at me, almost standing still... so I thought, "hey, this is good" but as soon as I focused the camera on them they swam arround like crazy... Grin

Mr. Popo's belly is still pretty light Wink

Almost white compared to the rest of him! And he still has a bit of a bronze hue on his sides from when he was a baby <3

Aww! That's just how fish are! When I "visit" mine to cuddle they are usually staring at me "talking" back to me, but as soon as I have the camera they have to show off how good they are at swimming xD

I did not see that on the pic, lol
so it should be easier to catch a glance of his butt Grin

I also learned today that boys do have more pointy pectoral fins and the girls fins are rounder.
Considering this it matches with Humphrey, the orange boy HAS got pointy fins and Hepsis fins ARE rounder.
Also Hepsis vent is more convex (sticks out a bit) and Humpsis is concave Grin

When I tried to have a close look, lol, my hubby said "Hannaaaaaa, stop it..." well... I want to know what I've got, like in the past when I had cats I looked if they were a cat or a tomcat Wink

AND books... but of course, it's probably the most certain method of finding out! But I think it works fine this way too (:
I also read that it could be particularly hard to see the difference on fish younger than a year, so maybe you should keep an eye on them as they grow older and see if it's still a little boy and a girl Wink
