how long can gold fish go with out food
« on: August 12, 2010, 11:27:46 AM »

we are going away for 8 days and i am concerned about the feeding each day we are away.  I have asked a freind if he would mind feedng the fish and he has said yes.  If by chance he forgets "grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" how long will a gold fish live?  we raiased these fish from about one inch long to now about 5 to 7 inches long and they are very people friendly becoming less and less afraid when i am feeding or cleaning the tank so it would be very upsetting to have anything happen to them.

They can live from 1-2 weeks if they are healthy.  If you are really worried you can buy a vacation feeder block or an automatic
feeder.  I would suggest feeding them a bit more then usual before you leave (if your friend isn't coming and you choose not to get a feeder block or an automatic feeder) and do a large water change just before you leave.  Hope this helps  Smiley

Please DO NOT feed them more before you leave, this will result in overfed fish, more waste and maybe rise in ammonia.>>nitrites>>nitrates, because your beneficial bacteria cannot cope with the overload of nitrogens. Result will be stressed and sick fish. I also strongly advise AGAINST vacation feeder blocks, as they disolve in water and polute it.

THEY WILL BE FINE FOR 8 DAYS

If you would go on holidays for  a longer period of time I advise automatic feeders,  or  your friend can feed them while you are away, but in this case prepare small prepacked amounts of food and strogly advise your friend to feed only one a day or even only every second day.

Do you have real plants in your tank? If yes no worries, your fish can survive easy for 2 weeks.

A very good thing is to remember too: A slightly hungry goldfish is a healthy goldfish   Smiley

Hope this helps

I didn't mean a whole lot more, just a smidge.  If you just feed them just a little more they will eat it and it will make no difference in water quality and it will keep them happier while PatC is away.

Hi fishaddict,
goldfish should only be given as much as they can eat in 2 minutes: twice a day, VERY MAXIMUM 3 times a day.
And they won't be happier or sad if PatC sticks to the usual feeding habits as long she/he is at home.
Also if a friend can feed them, there is no sense of giving more...

PatC, in this case just prepack some food for the time you are away, and do not worry they can live easy for 8 days without food, especially if you do have live plants like Elodea, Hornworth or Ambulia. Those plants are like a lovely snack and salad bar to them. But DO NOT get a feeding block, PLEASE.

From my recent experience - fishes were pretty comfortable without us for 14 days, being left in the apartment with filter on and piece of long-play feed (a thing that gradually dissolves in the water) in the tank which you can buy in any pet shop for couple of bucks.

I agree with Hanna

Don't worry, your fish will be ok event you not giving food for a week.
If you worry, i will recomend automatic feeder. Because you can set amount of food each time and you dont worry about polluting water.

Thanks Andiy, give you a karma for this Wink

To PatC:
I only type this in bold and capital letters now to emphasize the importance: I DO STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST THOSE FEEDING BLOCKS those things which disolve in water and you can get for a couple of bucks in every pet shop. The risk is too high. There may be few people where it worked out well BUT there are too many people out there who regret they did feed with them things. They came back home to a stinking polluted tank with dead fish Sad

Hanna: You shouldn't think "feed them two minutes a time" but think "feed them until they're satisfied". Since there are some goldfish who could easily overeat in two minutes! The best thing to do is to feed them a small, small amount and several times a day, between 1 to even 5! But very, very, very small amounts.

On your comets it would be easy to see when they'll be done eating, since their belly would start bulging a bit Wink

But I'll give you karma for saving me the trouble of typing "don't feed the fish" and why Tongue Also, for the feeder blocks!

feeding blocks are fine i have used them for years yes they will pollute the water abit but so does feeding the fish plellits or flakes. or any other type of food. unless u never feed your fish them the water would be fine. but fish need food. goldfish will last a week with out it.

creamkiller: But while you're home, you can change the water for the fish when the food has polluted it. If you have the feeding block, you won't. It will constantly dissolve, and might result in serious water quality problems and over fed fish.

So in any case, when going on a vacation shorter than two weeks, I'd rather just do a major water change and ask a friend to feed them once every week, or not at all.

A goldfish is a cold blooded animal, so they consume a whole lot less nutrition than a mammal does, as most of the calories a mammal eats is used to keep the body warm. A fish won't complain even after being without food for a week, since they will find algae and other particles to graze on in your absence.

Creamkiller, this is no fun to post things like this, especially if there are really inexperienced people on here, they would take this for serious.

In the meantime I know your sarcastic humor Wink but others don't... so please think twice before you post such comments, OK ?

As this post gets a bit confusing for PatC, I think, because he/she didn't reply at all to our posts, I want to make a few things clear:

1. Feeding amount: there are a few different opinions, as  there are different advices in different Goldfish books:
In Nossies book they say to feed up to 3-5 times a day but VERY, VERY, VERY TINY AMOUNTS. This is very good if someone is at home to do this. Would be ideal.
I also read like I posted at the start 2 times a day, max 3 an amount they will eat up in 2 minutes (not to feed for 2 minutes)
For our fishies I'll stick to this one as we are working, so they get their feed once in the morning and once in the evening as soon as we are back. And they are beautiful, happy and healthy fishies.

2. Automatic feeder: this is a VERY good option if people are on holidays and there is no friend, family member to come and feed the fish... or to have it anyway....

3. Somebody comes to feed the fish: leave strict instructions and have single food amounts PREPACKED for the time you are away

4. Slow disolving feeding-blocks:  ABSOLUTELY   NO    !!!   As I mentioned before, for a few people it might work, but for majority it doesn't: result: polluted water, sick and/or dead fish ....

PatC, this is my advice for you, also do your 10-15% waterchange before you leave, add conditioner, check pH

Also I hope that you can leave some feedback for the people who posted on here for you Wink Thanks.

HAVE A LOVELY AND ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY Cheesy

Do as Hanna described, only difference there would be, do a larger water change Wink
The fish are constantly producing waste, so removing only 10% of that won't make a difference! There was this example in one of my books that if you remove 10% of the water/waste, you end up leaving another 90% in the tank. Following week, the fish will create just as much waste, and to then again remove 10% will be leaving 90% of this weeks waste and leftovers of the one from last week, in other words, you'd leave more waste than healthy water in the tank.

So whenever going on a vacation (or in general) no smaller water changes than 50%!

OK, Nossie, I see the point Wink doing a bigger waterchange.
... only thought if it is a weekly one this may be ok, but think you're right  Wink

I didn't know about it myself actually, but then I found it in that book of mine and realized that... "HEY! It's TRUE! O_O"
Then I started imagining goldfish waste as a red liquid that's getting diluted during every water change Cheesy Makes sense!

But I've lately been doing pretty big water changes for my fish since the nitrates build up rly fast :| Man, I wanna move now!!

Those feeding blocks that dissolve ARE really messy, even when they say on the package that they "will not cloud the water".  I used one in my old tank and the water turned cloudy white in no time.

I went on a 7-day vacation earlier this year, and put in some live plants for them to eat, and I didn't clean the sides of the glass until I got home (so they could eat the algae).  This worked well.  Since your fish are so big, you may need quite a few plants.

When I brought the plants home, I soaked them for 2 days in a bucket of tap water before putting into the aquarium, because the pet store recommended this, and it worked fine.  I think soaking them helps to ensure that you won't be adding snails to your tank, and maybe helps clean them.

I know that your fish will be fine for 2 weeks without feeding.
There is something out there tho, by tetra that is NOT a block but a gel pack and as the gel dissolves, the food releases.
Looks like flakes in a round clear plastic but it dissolves slowly over a few days.
Anyway has anyone ever tried this product?
The white plaster blocks I would never use!  I can just imagine the mess that would be! Roll Eyes
