How long is too long?

Hi All,

I have two small fancy goldfish, both between 2-4 months old i would say.  Right now they are in a 10 gallon tank, I KNOW this isnt big enough but unfortunately right now I am unable to afford anything bigger.  So, I have been religiously doing 1/3 water changes at least twice a week and using the water conditioner as well as a little bit of salt once in a while with the water changes.  Both of my babies seem very happy and healthy and extremely active, they get flakes in the morning and either blood worms or a pea or two as a treat at night.  My question is...how long can I keep them in this 10 gallon?  If I cant move them to a bigger tank for another 2-3 months is that OK?  I dont want to stunt their growth but my budget is what it is.  Any thoughts?

Been there done that.  My best suggestion would be to either pick up a water test kit or take samples into the store each week.  Your fish will also tell you when enough is enough, but testing the water should alert you early.  There are also water test kits that stick on the glass with suction cups and last a month.  Ours didn't stick so well, but if you can get them to stay, it will be helpful.

Iredien the same thing happened to me too! I'd recommend doing water changes 2 or 3 times a week. It'll help keep parameters in check. Wink

Sounds good generally, but stop adding the salt to the water. Goldfish are freshwater fish, their bodies can't handle a constant concentration of salt.

I kept my three fantails in a 10 gallon for a year, in the end doing 75% water changes every second day because they nitrates built up just that fast :/ But if you can get another tank already after 2-3 months, that's great! Cheesy

I'm in the same situation, but I have 4 goldfish in a 10 gal. Just get the water healthy with a filter/declorinator/watre test kit ect and they should be fine til you can manage something bigger.
