How long to keep fruits and veggies clipped
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:57:13 PM »

Tonight was Teetsy's first night eating mango and Bibb lettuce. I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to keep the food hanging. I kept it up for 1 1/2 hours so her/his daddy could see him/her eating it. Was that too long?

I don't think so, I've heard of some leaving food in the tank longer. I try to feed my little goldfish directly with tiny bits so nothing is left to float around, however a few times he's missed the hand-off and it sunk to the bottom. He eventually found it and inhaled it! Do you blanch the lettuce before offering it to your fish?

48 hours max, but 24 hours or less would be better Smiley

You dont have to blanch the lettuce.  Bib lettuce is very soft and not stringy as is red leaf lettuce.
Lettuce like Romaine which is stringy should be finely chopped or blanched first.
I only feed the red leaf variety to my fish. Smiley

I usually feed the fish in the evening, a few hours before the light's out and then I leave the veggies until morning for them to nibble Smiley But FRUIT shouldn't be left in the tank as long as veggies, since fruit contains more acids and whatnot so it can mess with the water quality.

Thanks for the info Minde, Andrea and Nossie - good point I never would have thought about acidic fruits!
