How many goldfish to a 20 gal tank?
« on: October 30, 2009, 02:07:46 PM »

my husband won a goldfish for me at the county fair. It is quite large and the local pet store thinks it's a comet goldfish, but it looks almost like a calico shubunkin. We have him in a 20 gallon tank, per the pet store's recomendation, and wanted to get another fish to put in with him, but we are not sure if that is allowed or what type to put in. We were told we could only put one goldfish in a 20 gal tank -- can we put another one in? Or a smaller fish? Help please.

I read somewhere that the rule was at least 10 gallons per goldfish, so you should be safe putting another one in.

20 gallons for the first fish and 10 gallons for each additional fish.

Thank you -- see, I'm not sure I get differing answers from everyone, so I'm not sure what to do. I had heard that I'd need at least a 29 gal tank for two goldfish ... but then also heard that two would be OK in a 20 gallon tank.

What if we got a stronger filter? one for a 30 gallon tank?

Goldfish are very dirty fish. If you were to put 2 in a twenty gallon tank you would need to clean the tank more often. The fish also will not grow as big as they possibly could in a bigger tank.

Hello Sara!

Ther is an empiric rule that says "10 gallon per 1 goldfish" thatīs a very usefull rule but is not enough; aditional to 10 gallons per fish we must observe the size of our fish tank not only its volume. The goldfish grows too much and quickly, if you have the adecuate wather and sapce contidions your fish keep almost 10 or 12 inches long.

there are many varietys of goldfish, the large varietys like comets, shubunkins and "comons" will grow at large size, other varetys  "fats" like orandas, pearlscale and ranchu will grow less.

I'm still confused -- ha I think we'll just keep our one fish until maybe we inherit my sister-in-law's 29 gallon tank. I love the orandas!

good idea on getting a bigger tank, but more important is to make sure the fish are compatable with each other. if you decide to go with the oranda then choose fish similar such as the moores or ryukins, stay away from sleeker faster fish, they are to competetive and will become bullies. Smiley

Right -- we have a shubunkin -- he's a smaller shubunkin ... but I'm fairly certain that's what he is! So I wasn't sure if we could put anything else in with him. But I guess not -- I can't get a solid answer from anyone. He seems happy -- I just don't like that he's alone. I hope he isn't lonely!

i thought that about my fish too and maybe she is lonely but it would be pretty pointless putting another fish in the tank for the purpose of friendship when they will forget eachother every three seconds! talk about confusing! swim swim swim "oh hello there will you be my friend?" " ye sure" swim swim swim " o hello there will you be my friend?" " ye sure" etc... and it would be worse if they were out of sync! swim swim swim " hey will you be my friend?" "ye sure!" swim swim swim "will you be my friend?" "jeesh, i already said yes!"
if you catch my drift!  Cheesy

i have a 3o gal tank with 8 goldfish all fancy tailed of different sizes from 1 inch to about 4 inches. I also have a fluval filter for 60gal aquarium.Along with that in the same tank i have a placo and 7 cory cats 3 albinos and 2 copper and 2 black tipped. My tank is full and many would say overcrowded but my water is clear and all seem happy and no tailchasing or agressiveness. So go figure the rule?? Undecided

Thank you for the advice, everyone! Wow, Martha! How long have you had all of those fish? I really wanted to get another fish so our tank would look full, etc. but I don't want anything to happen to our original goldfish.

What kind of fish do you have, Mary? If it's a goldfish, it needs a least a 20 gallon tank with a 20 gallon filter or higher.

ayeyuh, the rule is a pretty good one...if you only clean the tank every month. i have seen happy tanks of big (4-5 inch, 7 month old fish ) kept 7 to an aquarium of 30 gallons, and theyve done fine. however, only two of the fish are 4-5 inches, the others are bout 2-3 inches, and there are snails and an enormous Pleco as well. the owner cleans about once every two weeks and none of the fish have ever been sick.
