GOLDFISH THAT WON'T GROW :(

Has anyone ever had a goldfish that won't grow?
I got 3 baby goldfish for my barrel ponds this spring and they have been out there all summer.
I brought them in for the winter now and 2 have grown a couple of inches but Smidget hasn't grown at all!!
He/she is still less than an inch!  Maybe he is a dwarf goldfish alth he eats like a horse!!!
Anyone have a goldfish that didn't grow before?Huh

That's so weird! Especially since they were kept outside! But... umm... It hasn't happened to me, no.

Btw, lately I saw my cousins redcap oranda, it was like 1 inch when I saw it the first time, ridiculously small, and today as I checked on them, the very same fish was 3 or even 4 inches long! O_O

I haven't heard or seen it either  Shocked... ours grow while you're looking at them... and eating like a horse, yes this is very mildly expressed Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Um...if they're not healthy they won't grow, I know that much.  Ours grow too.  One of our friends came to see the baby, and she said they'd gotten bigger just in the 2 months since she had seen them last.

Yeah, maybe something is wrong with him... Sad
But he looks and acts healthy, swims dorsal fin up and like I said before eats piggily when it's feeding time.
His two friends are huge compared to him, bought at the same time and they were all the same size pretty much. Smiley

Maybe it is just in his genes? If he behaves so normal he should be happy and healthy.

Okay, here's the deal Smiley
The first months in a goldfish's life are crucial for them to grow properly, in other words, they need to get a lot of nutritious food while they're still young Smiley There are some fry that get more food than others, because they're faster, so they grow bigger right away. So, your fish could be one of the smaller fry that weren't fast enough, and will simply not grow much when it's older. Which I believe is quite possible since they were sold as feeder fish, right? The breeder probably didn't care as much for feeding them, as a breeder of show fish for instance Smiley

If I remember correctly, there was someone on this forum that had a pearscale that didn't grow over the course of a few months, even a year I think!

Yep, I think you're right Nossie.
They were feeder fish. Smiley
He's probably been stunted nutritionally.
He was in a tank with 100 other feeders.
Poor Smidget...well he'll have a happy life as long as he lives but I wonder if his life will be shorter because of his growth problem!
I'll keep you al updated onhis progress.
I would have thought with all the natural food in the pond and plus I fed them their goldfish food everyday he would have grown.
Hmmm...now I am curious if he will grow, and how much and how long he will live compared to the others. Undecided

I really hope that he can have as long life as the others even if he'll be smaller... but I really don't know :/

Btw, Horus snuck out of the plastic basket I kept in the tank... and he's being really nice to the rest! o_O He hasn't tried biting them at all, so maybe he learned his lesson? I'll be keeping an eye on him from now on anyways, just in case Smiley I was thinking that Mr. Big maybe showed him how things work in that tank ;P

I have an Oranda that hasn't grown very much at all! Angry
The rest of the fish are growing but this one is still the same. Sad

Does your oranda seem healthy?  I just ask because Smidget seems super healthy and active but just won't grow!!
He eats like there is no tomorrow and swims like something is after him! Smiley
He's like the size of a neon tetra to answer andreas question how big he is.. Smiley

He/she seems alright though, eats like the rest. This oranda is probably 1.5 to 2 inches long from nose to tail. But still it bothers me... Sad

I think I've had him since June. He's hardly grown.  Somedays I look at him and think he might have grown and then other days I look at him and say Naw your just a Smidget and will always be a teeny tiny goldfish! LOL!
