What's left of Curly fish....
« on: December 20, 2011, 11:18:15 PM »

1. How big is your tank: 10 gallons

2. For how long has the tank been set up: 3 months

3. How many fish: 3

4. What kinf of fish: 1 small common goldfish and 2 small comets

5. What are the water parameters:    Ammonia.........not sure
                                                            Nitrite..............not sure
                                                            Nitrate.............not sure
                                                            pH..........................not sure
                                                            Temp...............not sure

6. How often do you perform water changes: Once a week or so.

7. How big are your waterchanges:      70%

8. What kind of waterconditioner are you using: Stress Coat +

9. Do you add beneficial bacteria: No

10. Symptoms your fish is showing: Loss of color and scales around head, pinkish appearence around head.

11. Since when does your fish show these symptoms: A week or so. Less than 3 weeks.

12. How is the normal behaviour of your fish: Active, erect fins, eats a little. Picks on my Common goldfish a bit sometimes.

13. How do the other fish behave: Active, erect fins, eating well, good colors.

14. Post pics of the sick fish:

15. Do you have a filter on your tank, what kind, how big (gallons per hour) Aqua Clear 20. 100 GPH

16. Do you provide extra aeration with an air pump and air stone/diffuser of some kind. No.

I've noticed recently that my sarasa comet, Curly, does'nt look as good as he use to. He's lost almost all the orange color on him and what's left is'nt as bright. I've also noticed some pinkish coloration on and around his head. He seems to be acting fine and I just cleaned the gravel which always results in a 70% water change. I know my tank is small, but there's not much I can do about it at the moment. Is there anything I can do for Curly? What could be wrong with him and could it be contagious? Is he going to die? Sad He looks ill. This is Moe all over again....

Here's pictures of Curly, the top one is of him when I first got him. The second is of him a couple months later. Last one of him now. He does't look like the same fish.

My friend who grew up around fish says this looks unheard of unless he's had his butt beat by another fish. :/ But no one picks on Curly, Curly does the bullying. But he's not missing any scales on his body except his head. Even my friend said he's never seen such a change in appearence. If he does live, will he ever look the same again?

It looks like a completely normal pigment change, it's very common in all colored goldfish but especially in those that have two colors. Usually as the fish ages, the smaller patterns may disappear and be replaced by their "base" color.
But of course, he'll keep these colors, possibly change them a little more until he's all white, so he won't ever look the same, but similar, maybe?

Don't listen to your friend, goldfishes' pigment change has nothing to do with physical trauma :/

Do you see any wounds on him? Is he emaciated or with breaking fins? Do the gills look brown?

Really? So you're saying he's fine? O.o Oh thank goodness. *faints*

No wounds, no damage to his tail or fins, he looks otherwise very healthy. He's very active. I don't know how to tell a skinny fish from a healthy fish? XD  I think the pink on his head, now that I look at it more, might just be the orange that he use to have fading. I'm just startled by the drastic change he's underwent.

Yep, more or less Smiley
As long as you'll keep up the water changes and be careful not to overfeed, I think they'll be just fine Smiley
Judging by the photos, he doesn't look like he's skinnier than usual either, and all the fins are erect and healthy!
But in case, keep a close look on him, in case anything would change Smiley

I recently read about water quality issues though, that more "permanent" ones may change the color of the fish. It may not necessarily be harmful for the time being, but in the long run it may affect the looks of the fish.

I think Nossie hit the nail on the head really.

As for the pink on his head keep an eye on it. You could always check his gills as well, I find giving Lucky something extra chewy and then check her gills visually, while she chews, is normally enough. As long as their a crisp, raw red colour, then it's fine Smiley

Just an update, Curly is entirely white now, save for a small orange spot on his tail. XD

It happens.  We've had our fish, Stripe, for two years, and he's lost almost all of his signature stripe.  Otherwise, he's a happy, healthy fish who enjoys swimming and begging for food.

The same thing has happened to my shubunkin Worf, he did have a very dark, almost black, colouring, he is now silver and brown more than black but is fine in every other way!  Grin

Good thing you asked at least Smiley As you can see, it's a pretty common occurrence.
How's it going with your tank nowadays, Goldfishnoob? Smiley (Wish I had another nickname for you by now xD)

Things are still going quite well. I just picked up some more stress coat and a felxible bristle brush to clean my filter tubes. They're still in the 10 gallon though. :/ But a promising job opportunity has presented itself and I'm gonna dive right in and hope I get it that way I can try to get them something bigger. I actually had this really odd dream that I finally convinced my dad to let me have a 40 gal, but when we got it home I realized we made a mistake and it was actually a 4 gal XD I was looking at it and it cracked like plastic and fell apart. Horrifying I know.

Awesome!! Best of luck with the job! Smiley I hope you'll get it!
Personally, I'm gonna jump onto a guardian education Grin Just to have something to do until I'll be good enough at tattooing to go look for work in that field Smiley

What a freaky dream... xD Like there wasn't a difference between 4 and 40 gallons xD
Creepy fish dreams are the worst... @_@

I am beginning to wonder, is there ever anything that isn't a creepy fish dream? All my dreams that involve fish, tend to be really weird!
