Andrea: A very commonly used method is to place a clean saucer or another flat object on the bottom and pour the water onto that Smiley Or you could use a colander (or the same thing you clean the gravel in) and let that spread the water into some smaller, lighter streams while pouring Cheesy

I poured it over the driftwood, not too quick though. And later with the water level rising, not a problem.

And please never think it is a silly question. There always will be things we do not know, and we all should feel free to ask, without hesitation. This is why we are here on this forum, to help and to share with our hobby we have in common.  Wink

I stuck our hose pipe down the filter, so the water came out of the filter in small trickles.

It looks fantastic! I must find out if I can get some real plants for our fish tank as it looks so great.

Are there any rules about adding new plants or ornaments to a fish tank?

THANK YOU BUBBLESGOLD  Grin  As you sure read, I used both in this tank, real AND fake plants. Our little wreckers eat everything they can eat  Grin so I thought instead of replacing ALL plants every now and then I must replace only 50% of those plants.
Also a background with plants ( in case the tank is in front of a wall ) helps a lot, it is like a feature.

Basically there are no rules adding new plants or ornaments to the tank. But I like to rinse them before I add them. I check the plants for small snails. Well, sometimes you cannot see them. Humphrey ate one once, should have seen the expression on his face, apparently he didn't really fancy it, but it was edible....  Grin

BubblesGold: The only rules there are is that the ornaments have to be non-toxic and safe to fish, so buy only things that are meant to be submerged Smiley And for goldfish, you should avoid ornaments with holes, unless the holes are big enough for the adult fish to swim through without problems, because otherwise they might get stuck as they grow, and that's quite stressful and can damage the fish quite badly :C

I would also agree with Hanna, that you should check for snails and other small creatures in the plants and clean them and all pebbles and ornaments before, as there can be annoying dust particles on them c:

Also, to that you need florescent lighting to grow real plants.
If you do not have florescent lighting then it is best to pick plants that are hardy and have low lighting needs. Smiley

Yes, this is correct, sorry I did not think about this one, all ornaments should be smooth and if there are holes they should be big enough for fishie to swim through, instead of getting stuck.... as goldfish tend to EXPLORE everything in creation you put in the tank.

I heard somewhenre that goldfish like flowerpots, but I'd be worried about pesticides.  Our fish have a plastic log with a hole in it that they loved for sleeping in.  Now all of them except Izzy are too big to fit and just sleep outside it. Smiley  Sometimes the toys with holes (big holes!) are nice because the fishies can hide in it.
