comet constipation upsidedown
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:43:02 AM »

MY 18yr comet is swimming upsidedown, eating upsidedown, settling in the tank on the bottom upsidedown. The belly before the butt is darker and swollen, can I  carefully squeeze the feces out,do they have fish enama stuff, or what is a good laxative for   fish constipation ? Any help would be appreciated          mike K

Don't squeeze him! Don't feed him at all for two days. When this time has passed, buy a bag of frozen peas, thaw them and pop them out of their shells and feed him with these. Always keep them in the freezer and only thaw the amount of peas you want to feed to your fish. This way they will stay fresh for longer (: I heard that worms or some epsom salts also work as laxative for fish!
If he won't get any better after a couple of days with this new diet, he might have a problem with his swim bladder, and then you would need to treat him with salt, make a 50% water change, remove any live plants, and add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. Keep the water well filtrated and aerated during this time of treatment.

Mike,
I agree with Nossie in that you do NOT want to squeeze your poor fish!  You might do more harm than good!
Adding the aquariun salt to the tank might give him some electrolytes.  Drop pieces of epsom salt in front of him and see if you can't get him to eat one.  Epsom salts are a great laxative.
After he is over his constipation you may want to change his diet to live/frozen food, worms live, frozen or freeze dried and chopped spinach, red lettuce, peas and oranges.
He is an older fish and older pets need more fiber in their diet!
Good luck and keep us posted! Smiley

A varied diet is important for goldfish of any age, so if you've been feeding him with staple pellets or flakes all his life up until now, it's quite understandable that he got some digestive problems Wink So no matter what, you should start giving him some live/freeze dried foods and vegetables like cucumber, peas, lettuce... C: It will make him stay healthy and happy many years longer! (:

I feed my fish peas. The one REALLY likes peas, and will go out of his way to eat all the pea-bits I drop in. Smiley so even if they arent consitpated, a varied diet is probably best Smiley

thanks for all the info, will try 2 days fast than epsom if needed. Brine schrimp, cuc, water fleas, epsom, spinach, lettuce and peas pureed, frozened in small cubes than thawed before feeding or  recipe close to it.

Sounds good (: It might also be good feeding him some pellets with high vitamin content (and stuff). Might be an idea to try soaking them (or buying sinking ones) before feeding c:
