Foods I can feed my comet
«
on:
April 10, 2010, 12:36:11 AM »
I am just wondering what different types of food I can feed my goldfish. I have normally just given it pellets but I want to start offering him some new fresh or frozen foods. I have some ideas such as peas and frozen brine shrimp. But any other suggestions?
Thanks.

I use to feed freeze-dried blood worms and tubifex to my fish twice a week (: They really enjoy it!
But before I give them the tubifex cubes I break them into smaller pieces and soak them, just for a while so they won't be floating around on the surface. My fish love catching those! (:
Peas are great! They contain lots of fiber and vitamins for your fish, so do try! Remember to buy frozen peas without salt or anything added! Thaw them and pop them out of their shells before giving them to your fish
If necessary, you can cut them into smaller pieces if your fish are still small (:
Other than this, you could always try feeding them some lettuce, try "planting" it in the gravel or sticking some small leaves in a clip and see how they like it (: I read that it might be good boiling it slightly for it to be easier to eat for the fish (:
Cucumber, zucchini, carrots... You could even try some orange if you want! They eat more or less anything

I feed my goldfish Vita Pet Goldfish Granules, Vita Pet Goldfish Flakes, Tetrafin Flakes and frozen thawed peas which I cut into very small pieces. I tried once mashing them through a sieve, but this is too small
They also nibble on the Elodea and suck on every little gravel stone

Nossie: Orange? Wow, really? Last thing I think a fish would eat, I dunno why but I'll try it. Gotta give my fish his vitamin C
I gave him some peas before and he gobbled them all down, I was pretty amazed (I think I am to use to birds and how weary they are of new food at first
) But thankyou for all the advice, I'm going to try all those vegies and those frozen foods.
A question though, if not eaten how long should I leave the vegies in there? An hour or just a few minutes? This isn't too likely though seeing as my fish is a guts.
Hanna: What is Elodea?? I don't think I've heard of it. And my fish always sucks on every little gravel stone too

You should leave veggies in there no longer than 24 hours, but you are right, our goldfish guts down everything they can eat
(Yes I know about birds, how fussy they can be, lol, I do have about 26 Rainbow-Lorikeets coming every morning and where we stayed before I had a Kookaburra who came on a regular basis sitting on my hand but he did not like it when I bought another brand of meat, so I had to feed that to the Magpies and buy the brand he liked, lol)
Elodea is an aquarium plant, it grows long with many, many small leaves on it. If you look at "Goldfish and Easter" in this forum, I posted some pics of our tank. You can see it there
Humphrey and Hepsiba will get peas tonight, I tried zucchini the other day but they didn't bother with that one.

Haha birds are soo cute, my two cockatiels are always so weary of new stuff but as soon as they get brave enough to try it generally they cannot stop.
Oh and thanks, I was thinking about putting a plant in my tank so I'll try Elodea for sure.

Elodea is recommended for goldfish, also Amazon Sword Plant. It is that one with the big leaves. Just ask your local pet shop.
But before you put them in the tank I would rinse them gentle but thoroughly under tap water and then soak them in "old" tankwater when you do the waterchange.
Yea, animals are cute when they get new food, lol, like us humans
When I gave our fishies those peas for the first time, you shoud have seen their faces... they were disgusted... did not touch them, so I gave flakes. They wuffed them down as there's no tomorrow.
I was prepared to clean the peas out of the filter, the next day, but there was nothing. So they ate them too. Cheated me.
Now they are crazy about peas.

Andrea,
All my fish love oranges and will eat bit of the pulp out of my fingers. I take all the skin off the pieces of orange so that they are fed just the juicy pulpy stuff.

My goldies have nibbled away their Amazon Sword Plants to near stumps, but they still enjoy swimming through them and hiding in them.
It does take fishies some time to get used to new food. I fed them organic salad greens yesterday, and after some testing, spitting out, and swimming away, I found all three leaves completely devoured in less than an hour.

I found a really awesome plant at the pet shop last time! *a slight bit offtopic* It's a smaller relative to Anubias, but these small ones rather grow along the tank bottom and they don't get very high. About 2-3 inches or so. Just thought I'd inform
They've got strong and waxy leaves, so goldfish won't eat them (:

Thankyou everyone
So far I have only tried peas but he is absolutely loving them. I'm going to go ask my pet shop about those plants when I get some time. In the mean time I'm going to try all your suggestions.

If goldfish love oranges, does anybody have experience with mandarines ?
I also read that strawberries are ok too? But in this case I would'nt feed with the litle seeeds on, only the inside?
