What type of filtration do YOU use?
« on: April 25, 2010, 02:29:40 PM »

Yo! (:

I quite recently found a cheap 83 gallon tank that I'm intending to get next month (since I also saw two lovely orandas in a pet shop nearby), and I am wondering what kind of filtration would be the best for goldfish, and also how strong. I read that it's good to combine filters with one another, as in, undergravel filter + power filter or simply power filter + power filter. Until the capacity of these filters together is twice the recommended capacity for the tank.
But I'm honestly getting confused by all those things because there are never any pictures D: And so, I decided to check with y'all how you do things!

What kind of filtration do you use in your goldfish aquariums? Please link to pictures of them if you can find them on the net! (: (In online shops of wherever, I'd be grateful!)

This is exciting Nossie!

We installed the undergravel filter with only one nozzle yesterday, pic attached.
You can put it together how big size you need.

It was about 2-3 hours work to get everything out of the tank, clean it and put everything back.
Hump and Hep had to move into a plastic container, they were hiding in the plants there, but they are fine now.
Tank is undergoing a small cycle, water was a bit cloudy yesterday, looks quite fine this morning, as I added API StressZyme before we went to bed last night.

Towards the undergravel filter we use the one which came with the tank, it uses those carbon cartridges, you remember?

Okay! I see (: Thank you for the info! Grin
And yes, I remember the other filter (: So you have a combination of an undergravel filter and a power filter? Or what is this second one?

I think it is one of them, it has this long nozzle inside the tank, the impeller sucks the water up and the wool-carbon cartridge sits in the hood and the water comes down from there back into the tank.

I attached another couple of pics, it should be visible there, it is with the old landscape though.
The 2nd one is the back of the tank, this is what I can see when I am cooking in the kitchen  Wink

Just want to inform that the water got a bit whitish cloudy yesterday evening, so I tested immediately, Ammonia was 0.50 ppm and so were Nitrites. Fishies were ok. I immediately added API StressZyme and API StressCoat.
Today I did a 20% waterchange and after about 6 hours I tested again: Ammonia 0.25ppm, Nitrite about 0.25 ppm. Water is crystall clear tonight, Hump and Hep behave like usual.
Will change and test tomorrow again until Ammonia, Nitrites are down, then I will need to watch the Nitrates.

Yeah, I think when this new plant (the green and white one) won't be good anymore I'll go back to Elodea. It looks nicer even if our fishies eat some of it... or some other suggestion?

I like hornwort a lot! C: They're really pretty! But I never had the balls to buy any because I'm afraid it'd end up like stumps floating around when my fish are in the mood for veggies...
But I think something similar to Elodea would fit your tank nicely! (: You could try looking around in some books or in shops if you see anything quick-growing with pretty leaves!

Nossie,
I think that what is recommended for any tank over 55 gallons is a canister filter and maybe also a power filter.
I have a 55 gallon tank and I use two 55 gallon filters by Aqueon in it.

It is more than sufficient.  As each filter turns over almost 300 gallons per hour.   Here is a link to Aqueon website.
(Link is not visible to guests. Please register to view.)

I use a 55 gallon Aqueon filter in my 30 gallon tank and a 30 gallon filter in my 14 gallon tank.  My orandas are in the 30 gallon tank and I have a gorami and some zebra danios in the 14 gallon tank.
I have extra aeration in all the tanks.  I had an undergravel filter a long time ago but I didn't like it as it was hard to keep clean and algae free.  The power filters are great and easy to clean.  You want to get one that offers mechanical as well as biological filtration.
Congrats on the new aquarium... Smiley

Thank you! I'll check it out! (: All I know is that some kind of internal power filter should come along with the tank, I don't know the efficiency of it or anything else though, so I was thinking that it might be good to get one more for the tank just in case!
I'll check this site out asap! (:

hullo all Cheesy sorry for the late reply to this thread.

i personally use a under gravel filter and a internal power filter (algarde under gravel filter and a fluval power filter) i have 2 air pumps in the tank too (orandas are very messy my! 7 are little nightmares at time haha good job i love them)

i know some people dont like under gravel filters but i must admit on my huge tank i find it keeps my tank looking stunning!

hope this helps Cheesy

Yo thanks! Smiley
I already have a Fluval 4 filter (the largest they had in the shop) which I was intending to combine with an external power filter by Eheim Smiley But I'm gonna have to save some money for that... Luckily my babies are still just babies Wink So they shouldn't be putting too much strain on that one filter since it's rather efficient Smiley

Sure I can! Cheesy

It's an Eheim Classic 2217 model, contains 6 liters of filter media and has a pumping strength on about 1000L/h Smiley
Rated for anything under, and up to 600 liters Cheesy You can pick the media you put into it yourself! Currently, I use what was inside the package (great deal!!!) which is simply different foam pads, coarser and finer Smiley Along with a pad of activated carbon, which was recommended by the manufacturer to use in case there were any chemicals coming from the filter when installing it. You can use ceramic balls or "pipes" as biological filtration in it, and there are packages with the correct amount of filter media that you can buy for maintaining the filter Cheesy
It needs to be placed under the water level, so holding it in a cabinet or on a shelf beneath the tank is perfect!
I keep mine on a shelf next to the tank currently, while lacking a better place for it d:

Here are a few pics Smiley

i can stand this anymore get the biggest canister u can afford with your money.

or better yet get a 20 gallon tank or something else that holds water and make a sump think of how much filter media / bioballs / rocks that will hold bacteria in a 20 gallon tank( yes it will work for goldfish to)

I use a whisper 10 in my 10 gallon hospital tank so the weakened fish do not have to struggle against the water current.
I use an Aqueon 20 in my 20 gallon tank.
I use a Aqueon 30 in my 30 gallon tank.
I use an Aqueon 55 in my 55 gallon tank.
I use a Fuval Canister filter 304 in my 75 gallon tank along with a internal filter/bubbler which holds carbon and zeolite and a sponge cartridge.  You just replace it after a months use..easy peasy! Cheesy
