hello all,

I have a 30 gallon thank with a good biological penguin 400 filter.  I have 6 oranda goldfish in there.  I know it is alot and plan on getting a bigger thank.

My problem is that I had the tank and the fish for 4 weeks and never cycled.  I changed the water 20% every week. My ammonia level is getting higher to about 4.0ppm and my nitrite and nitrate isn't present.  I also have two biowheels working.

Does anyone recommend me buying any solution to get the bacteria to grow?  Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for responding Mindemae.   I can't get another tank for another few months until I settled with my new house.

I hope my orandas will survive.  They seem fine now.   I have a gravel tank.  Should I buy something like decorations so the bacteria can grow on them.  I try that stress api and pour in on my biowheel. 

Should I get ammolock or ammochips?

Remember that the Oranda is one of the biggest varieties in the goldfish world, they easily reach 12 inches in length, so get them a bigger tank as soon as you can! Otherwise you'll be having trouble with sick fish and water quality problems the rest of their shortened lives. Think 20 gallons for the first fish and add 10 for each additional fish, in other words, you need a 70 gallon, or two 30-40 gallon tanks running at once. Maybe you should give some of your fish back to the pet store or to someone else if you're not ready for this?

It'd be cool if people would bother getting at least half the knowledge about fish that they'd get about dogs for example if they'd get a puppy! Fish need care too, and they can be incredibly rewarding to keep (:

I thought I'd take it rather slow with my tank once it comes, adding a bit of water from their current tanks + fresh tap water and letting it get ready for my fish (: At least past the worst ammonia spikes.
Good thing my fish are still so small though! So they won't be putting too much of pressure on the filter.
