I think I'm finally starting to get it!
« on: July 14, 2011, 08:31:26 AM »

This is just a "random thought" post, but as a newbie, I am pretty proud of myself so I thought I'd share.  I think after weeks of killing a couple fish and wondering what I am doing wrong...I think my tank is FINALLY fully cycled.  I do 25% water changes about every 3 days, I feed a little bit of flakes in the morning, a pea or two at night and some blood worms here and there...my 2 goldie babies seem SO happy.  They are super active, much more so than before and the bigger of my 2 fish has grown significantly even in the last few weeks.  I can really see his wen coming in.  Every morning I get up and check if my smaller fish's wen has started growing yet, it hasnt...but she too has gotten bigger in the belly.  I am going to go buy the hikari lionhead food (or hikari oranda) for them this weekend in hopes that this will help them grow even more.  Someone mentioned fry food for live bearers...does anyone have suggestions on a good brand and, does Petsmart or one of the bigger chains carry this type of food?  I looked on the website but couldnt find it.
Sorry for the pointless post I'm just so proud of myself that I am finally seeing progress with my tank.  I still only have the 10 gallons for them but will definitely upgrade, for now though they are so small that it doesnt seem to be too much of an issue.  Hopefully I'll find a nice used 29 galloner soon Smiley

Congratulations on your success in your tank! Not a pointless post at all, celebrating healthy happy pets is always great, and this is a wonderful example of how quickly proper care can change a fish's life  Wink  Great job!

Glad to hear you are having such sucess with your goldfish! We all long to get to that point, and though we still encounter problems in the future, it is a great acomplishment on your part!  Wink Happy fish keeping to you, Ireiden!

Wonderful Smiley
Maybe you should bring a sample of the water to the pet shop to see if they could test it for you? You know, to have it black on white before you break out the champagne Wink
But there's no doubt really, as long as the fish are acting that active that your tank is getting there, if it isn't already there Cheesy

Fry food for livebearers? Why? Do you have livebearer fry?

No but someone mentioned that it is good for young fish and to help with the oranda head growth...not sure if there's truth to that or not, I'm going to buy the hikari stuff as soon as I can drive to the place that sells it.  I dont know why they dont carry it in Petsmart, you have to buy it online and I dont feel like paying S&H

Nah, as long as you feed live foods and good quality goldfish pellets, don't bother. Live bearers also have so much smaller mouths than goldfish, so I'd avoid that really.
